I have an LX Nosecone and Bonnet that Ive had in the shed for a while,I want to get these Soda Blasted them we'll paint them and fit them ,as the ones on my car are in pretty crap shape.

Any ideas( especially W.A guys) what sort estimate they charge on blasting 2 panels?, theres one in Naval base ( 25 min drive from me) that does Soda Blasting, this will be most convenient for me but I'm guessing its not cheap to get done?..

Im not in your area at all so i dont no about prices but i just wanted to say be carefull with soda basting. While its more heat and panel friendly it leaves a slight coating of crap on the panel which has to be neutralised with water. ( water on bare steel doesnt sound awsum to me) and if you dont get it of the paint wont really stick to well. Also nosecone and guards might be ok as theres not alot of places for the soda to hide but for other panels with double layers or cavities the soda gets in and causes it to rust fast. Just my 2 cents, wouldnt want you to stuff your good new panels. Good luck with them
Cheers jake

Iv'e just looked at the Guy's website who is in Naval Base and its actually not Soda Blasting but  a "  Diamond Blast System" whatever that is?.

I would paste a link of the guy's Website but for some reason I'm having LOTS of probs on this site lately?? and It wont let me paste any links including some You Tube Videos I made, plus after looking at 2-3 threads on here in a row, I then keep getting an error saying GMH TORANA .COM could not be found?. Something wrong on my end I suspect

i've used the guy in naval base both personally and for a mates HK rebuild.

My painter also uses this guy.

I've found he does great work but he has an offsider who is pretty slapdash. You need to underline the need to take care with the panels because the offsider just smashes through stuff.

a bumper he did for me was ruined and a k frame he did looked like it was sandblasted by ball bearings rather than plastic beads.

my mate with the hk has expensive toys and he thought it was expensive.

that would be 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar,,, every true panel shop should have this mixed up in 20l drums as it is also the best and cheapest rust killer you can get...

4lt of rust killer brand name from paint shop $36

1lt of vinegar homebrand works best $1.98 from coles or wollies, just add 3lt water=free

cheers gong

I know of two guys who had soda blasting done

My mate had the doors of his hr ute done he cleaned and primed them and a couple years later when he went to paint them all the primer just peeled off

The other one was a lh torana,he primed the car left it for a few years and the primer just peeled of in sheets both

Ive been told you have to wash the panels really good with soapy water then prepsol and scour them before priming

KB Rust Blast will remove the soda blasting residue, etch and prevent flash rusting.

For just 2 panels I would do a combination of paint stripper and sanding.

I used ferropro rust convertor on the panels after.

Treat panels with ferropro then wash with water. Then clean up with metho.

They lasted weeks in a salt air environment.

The water neutralises/washes away the acid or caustic substances.

The metho removes traces of water.

Think Dream Car Garage recommended that all areas be sanded after treatment and prior to painting.

Makes sense to me.

yeh thats because the soda leave a protective coat on the panels.

neutralizes, kills, and stops it dead in its tracks mate. warning do not just use strait VINEGAR as it will eat the rust and then start eating your car too.

i normally get 16lt water in a 20lt drum with a tap on it and add 4lt of vinegar

cost under 5 bills,,, if you are to buy this in any other brand name rust killer or preventive it would cost you over 150 bills,,, try it out fellers on a small piece of scrap you have nothing to loose.

1-spray on rusted bare metal  with water bottle

2-leave overnight

3- wash of with clean cloth and water

4- dry as you go with cheap home brand paper towel

5- prime away

cheers gong

Out of Interest I rang Greg at Stripped Bare Blasting and they want $300.00 to blast and paint the LX Bonnet ( with 2 Pac Primer) and only  $80.00 to do the Nosecone...

Question for you john. What kind of rags or cloths do you use when wiping down the panels? I no that a soda blasted panel is left smoother than a garnet or sand blasted panel but no matter what kind of cloth i use it still seems to leave lint either thro static or just just the texture of the panel. Any tips would be great thank you.
Cheers jake

i like to use old baby nappys or tee towels or flanny with air,,, with cleaning or prepping a panel for paint, but once to the paint stage nothing but prepsole and a tac rags

just remember your LINT or specs will come out as you sand back your coats,,,

sorry about the spelling mate

cheers gong

To prevent the lint fullstop I use a soft dust pan brush and compressed air.
