I don't run a HEI dizzy, however, there is only one thing to do with a nylon gear and that is give it a new home in a rubbish bin.

Steel, the same as is fitted on the oil pump.

I use a NEW nylon gear. Helps minimise spark scatter. Don't re-use a 30 year old nylon gear...just asking for trouble.

GMH trialled the Nylon gears in the early 70's and eventually found they were more prone to spark scatter (as you call it) plus other problems than the steel gears.

Nah, the nylon acts as a damper. Only a marginal difference mind you, and scatter can still be present.
Also - Fairly sure most of the original Bosch HEI (so early 80's) I have pulled out had a plastic gear fitted.

It's a few years since I got the last one, but in the past I've picked them up from Performance Ignition Services in Nunawading.
You would have to be able to buy them cheaper from a parts place, but to be honest I've never tried to buy them elsewhere. I find the advice I get when picking up the gear well worth it. Makes the price of the gear cheap even...
