Great article, great car but a few embellishments and opinions in that article, but typical of Unique Cars not to let facts get in the way of a good story (the current edition's Sandman pile of bullsh!t for example)!

Great article, great car but a few embellishments and opinions in that article, but typical of Unique Cars not to let facts get in the way of a good story (the current edition's Sandman pile of bullsh!t for example)!

Steady on don't knock the van. ........ LOL

I have some very fond memories of the old sandman pv. Lots of good memories of the sandman van actually. Might have always been a torrie man, but there where some thing's that I couldn't use a torrie (even with a hatch).

The old sandman van really became an icon of my youth and sure I preferred the torrie, but for the beach, drive-in or camping the old sandman wasn't a bad unit to have in the 70's.

At my age whenever an old song plays on the radio I have vivid memories of where I was when it was a hit.

Its amazing how many vans used to be lining up at the drive-in's on the weekend, now you wonder where they all went.

Many magazines get things wrong, you have to wonder who or what their sources are.

Makes me wonder how many did survive because it went from one extreme to the other.

The van scene was just enormous in the 70's, it was far bigger than many younger might actually realise. Having a van in the 70's was really part of the pop culture of Australian youth, but in hindsight it just flowed on from what we did in the 60's.

I certainly got a lot of flack for my preference for driving the hatch over the sandman but I was more into hotrodding for racing, speed, handling etc than the custom scene.

I have not seen what they wrote about any Holden Sandman.

But what you say doesn't surprise me. So many of these so called specialist journalists write stories based on pub talk and wives tales.

One only has to read here on this forum how the same old bs stories keep getting regurgitated even though dozens of threads have proved such stories are just that BS.

Indeed, if you were a surfer it was a must have, as you mentioned it was popular among the drive-in crowd, they'd face the rear to the screen and open up the back.

They were also a great canvas for customising and many were covered in murals, more so than cars. Who remembers this one?

Yep, the whole custom scene went crazy in the 80's particularly with front ends, nothing was forbidden.

Seemed every second show van had the Trans Am front, good to see the Alley Cat at least got rid of that.
