Hi all, whats a good dizzy to use with my 186 which I am rebuilding. Obviously I am looking for performance.

I have read the oldjohno stuff, and while it is good, I was wondering if somebody can simplify it a bit for me. At the moment I am thinking you don't need a separate coil with some of these, and some don't have points. Is there a good dizzy out there which I can just throw in. There are some on ebay:

HOLDEN Electronic Distributor Complete Kit Coil & Leads 138 149 161 179 186 202

OUR DISTRIBUTOR IS A MUST FOR THOSE WISHING TO UPGRADE THE IGNITION SYSTEM FROM POINTS, OR THE POORLY DESIGNED ELECTRONIC IGNITION THAT HOLDEN CAME OUT WITH AROUND 1974. THIS IS A TWO WIRE DISTRIBUTOR. THIS DISTRIBUTOR WORKS IN ALL CABURATED RED, BLUE AND BLACK ENGINES

oldjohno mentions the "Delco HEI from an AMC Jeep 232-258ci six cylinder to the Holden engine."

Thanks,

Glenn

Hi Glynn,

I have used the original Dizzy with heaps of Power - in my view, it is not the dizzy, high end ones, are for making maximum gain from every rpm, but you need a very high performance motor with everything done. Dave I

Just the timing at Idle should be 17 BTDC with a good worked motor and low vacuum

Either get a coil in cap HEI and mod to suit or rebuild a factory electric one.

Or if your weird like me persist with points dizzy's :P

You didnt actually link to the ebay? add you quoted, but it sounds very pro comp. Google pro comp and see what the reviews are like....

Cheers.

I remember the points Dizzy and a GT40 Coil always growing a Pyramid in the points, that was when the Power Disappeared, so a file and off we go again. Dave I

Also, I set the points with a Redhead Matchbox Box, as it was about 17 thou

Ah, what a contradictory add.

I ran one of those boch ripoffs in my old boat and it was alright. Infact just looking at it i recon my new boat has that exact setup and it hasnt failed yet.

Not procomp, so not to bad, but a bit pricey for what you get.

WHen you say your looking for performance, how much are you looking for?

Cheers. .

Does anybody else have more information on the different dizzys and how they work. Like which ones need coils and which ones don't and why.

Thanks heaps,

I brought the eBay knock off copy of the VC VH , bosch unit
I linked it up with a MEC 718 coil
Seems fine, engine runs sweet
I have heard he module is not as good as the bosch unit, the rest is fine

For All Out Performance Can't Go Past a Magneto of the Vertex Kind, No Coil or battery needed and zero point bounce at 9500 rpm's which your lil 6 pack will never see, Can be had for $500+ and damn hard to beat......
