The 308 in the LX is a bit old and tired these days, when funds are higher it will be Reconditioned( god knows when?) what oil do you guys recommend for a " getting on" 308 Red Motor?.

I'll opt a thicker oil,she's a bit ticky these days ...10w 50??

I would also recommend a thick penrite oil. Just treated a 1981 364,000 km mercedes inline 6 to some of their stuff and it did wonders for oil consumption, temperature and the way the engine runs.

Are there any negatives in using the thicker hpr30 to a 20w50?

I put it in my 308 recently as it has a couple minor oil drips after driving & it's definitely reduced the amount dripping.

^ as you can see (on the outside of the motor) thicker oil means reduced flow, the same goes for inside the motor, in the bearings etc, flow, as thru the little clearance in the dripping seal, is reduced in all the clearances...

Would the HPR30 reduce the flow to a dangerous level in a red 308?

I tried searching oil tests on a 308 however my search came up empty. With the oil issues 308's have prior to mods surely sometime in the past different oils have been tested to determine which is the best for a 308?

no it wont....the HPR30 was designed for the big bore 6's and v8's its still a mineral based oil which i prefer over full synthetics unless a all out race engine

Castrol do an EDGE 25w 60 also very good for the 'ol 'oldens 308's 350's 351's etc...if the oil is too thin for the app it will flow through the bearing too fast not giving it a chance to take heat away from the bearing

with old school type engines with bigger clearances(308) or high milage ones you need a thicker oil to act as a barrier against wear ..but also the oil is flowing slower through bearing to capture as much heat as possible

Holden specified 20w 50 i think right up till the end before they changed to LS Chev power

Any 20w 50 will be fine for it, if it uses a lot of oil or leaks lots theres not much use running a spendy oil like HPR30 which btw would be fine for it and wont hurt the motor at all.
