I am trying to find out how to find my GTR-XU1,s vin. This is because back in 1981 i had a drivers side accident and the original plate was destroyed. I know all the other numbers and codes, so does anyone have any bright ideas for me.

you will probably see more that color as people start to take cars back to the original colors, etc.
did you try contacting rta etc to see if the vin was on the reg details they have.
some are, some aren't?
get an rta print out of the previous owners, start trying to trace back the owners, may turn up books, receipts, repairs, possibly with vin recorded?
as for id plates, I have always removed the vin and body plate on purchase and kept in a safe place, not left on the car where they can be borrowed/damaged, reducing the value of your pride and joy. adr plate matches chassis no, so they don't get borrowed so often.
then fit a custom aftermarket vin plate if you are worried.
who cares if the plates have been off the car, long as the numbers match, and the chassis number is not welded in etc.
might pay to remove the adr plate as a last resort, may have what you are looking for underneath? I have never looked, so just what I have heard.
good luck!

The car that you saw was it at the torana nationals on the gold coast?
If it was then thats my car. If not then go to general dicussion forum scroll down to Torana Masters by MR NOS, my car is there. Thanks for the info.

sorry about my grammer.
if you take the plate off, take care not to damage it, as the plate is softer than the rivet holding it.
the big rivets are nos on ebay.
the pop rivets often break off putting something pointy in the middle and wriggling it.
maybe PM HG350 about the adr plate first. might be just an old wives tail.

will be 82911J then
H (1-4) brissy
expect it would be H2 then a 1 or 2 (eg H21xxxx, )
if the 5th number is very high it will be a H1, but not likely. (eg H19)
I don't see to many qld cars, mainly adelaide built, so have some grey area at the change over from h1-h2.
they started H1xxxxx- to H199999 then H2xxxxx etc.
there may be discs available soon that will help if you have the last 5 numbers
give doublin gtr ring, probably more exact.

your knowledge of the numbering sequence used by the factory is impressive!
Did you used to work for GMH or do you have a copy of microfische records?
Do you own an XU-1....??
Cheers Greg..

If only I new then what I know now!
I was into toranas as most of my mates, alot of us used to buy rough ones for 500-1000 dollars for parts.
they were worth more in bits. it was common practice, now they are thin on the ground. esp the ones with the changed vin. eg 1973 ect. some of the best mock ups I saw wrecked had funny vin numbers on them!
thats why there aren't many 73 bathurst cars. most people thought they were fake.
nobody would take the vin plate off fake cars! so they didn't get a new life.
these cars are/were easy to steal, you could find a stolen/recovered gtr/xu1 every w/end at the wreckers in the early 80's. esp LC's (no steering lock)
I am suprised there are so many left.
wreckers had rows of them bent in half, with a tree in the middle where the gear stick supposed to be. they were light in the back!
it was also big on upgrading LC's to look like LJ's
I have decided to build a V8 LC GTR. oneday!
I had 2 in the 80's with holden V8's both LC gtr's.
why bother with a angry 6? just drop a mild 8 in it.
I had severe 6's as well
there is nothing I have supplied that is not available on this forum!
just take notes.
so this forum is a wealth of knowledge. I still don't have a good handle on head numbers etc as I am looking at a V8
still reading and learning
looks like all the bits sold off out of gtr/xu1's are slowly making there way back into them where they belong.

We have vic roads, you need to show proof of ownership before they will release that info. as for rta, best to ring them.
couldn't find the photos you mentioned.
where are they?
