i just put a blue 253 and commodore trimatic in the lh.

when i put it in reverse the engine stalls.

when i put it in drive the car shudders, especially going up the driveway.

appears to be leaking from the input shaft seal, but the symptoms happen when trans is full.

a mate told me it could be an engine problem, like a load problem or something, but it feels like the trimatic. any ideas??

cheers.

first tune the motor and that will eliminate that.
sounds like the box needs some work tho.
might be worth copping a $80 service and they will let you know whats wrong with it.

tuning that motor is a little easier said than done... does anyone know the timing details for the blue 253? i only have the red details...

has anyone actually experienced shuddering due to a stuffed trimatic? could it be the tailshaft or the leads/something to do with the engine?

cheers.

make sure your trimatic linkage are correct otherwise it may be between gears, especially when a commy trimatic's gear selector is on the otherside of the box

cheers julian

Get the auto serviced, they should be able to give you an idea about the general condition of the box.

Alternatively, pull the auto dipstick after a drive, the oil should be clear and red. if it is brown and smells burnt its time for an overhaul.

Put the box into reverse at idle, (if it will go in at all without stalling) it should go into gear straight away, if it is slow going in the reverse clutches are probably stuffed, an indication of time for an overhaul. (Trimatics had a nasty habit of tearing the facings off the reverse clutch plates, blocking the filter and casuing slipping in forward gears.)

If you have the tools and skills pull the auto sump off and have a look for your self, there should be no excess metal fragments or clutch facings in the sump. (see above)

Other things that can cause shuddering are broken engine mount(s) or possibly a stuffed converter.

hm... just did the sump gasket last week. yeah there was some shrapnel in the pan and the oil didn't look real red.

the mounts are fine, not too sure about the torque converter...

reverse engages right away, but theres a delay on drive...

the auto off the 202 is different isn't it? can't just swap the bellhousings??

cheers.

the auto is similiar between the 4,6 & 8 cylinder however the bellhousings are different. Also different are the clutch packs, vavle body springs, clutch spacers etc. If the box is slow going into drive it sounds like the band may need adjusting, or it may be worn out. A good second hand box shouldnt cost too much for one of these, if thats what you do try and get one from a similiar year. There is a red tag on the side that identifys the box, in particualr it has 2 large letters on it which denote the model of the transmission.

i'm thinking of getting the thing rebuilt... $700 for pick up, rebuild and refit... AS LONG AS IT STOPS THE SHUDDERING! :furious:

I would tune the engine first & take it from there as it isnt that hard to service a trimatic,it might be still be good or might be RS but it's a good way to learn so get yourself a manual & have a go.

ok... i've tried and tried and tried tuning that engine.. i swear it hates me. I've put a new rotor button in it, new leads, new plugs and i've checked the firing order a million times, yet it still stalls in reverse!

the book says that plug one on the dizzy needs to be sort of on the passenger side, but my engine will only work if i turn the dizzy so that plug one is almost up against the fire wall.

a mate recommended a place for the auto today.. the bloke said $550 if i take it out myself, which i'm happy to do, but he wanted the motor running almost perfect before he goes near it.. any ideas? i'm really running out of time!

cheers

If it was mine I would do a compression test because if there is something wrong with the engine then trying to tune it will never really work out well if it is down a cylinder so make sure you have a good base to start with.
What is the history of this engine? It could also be a dud balancer, stretched timing chain or simply a matter of the dissy not being installed correctly.

Sounding a bit like a timing/low vacuum issue. Not enough "power" at idle to keep it running in gear.
