I have a friend that has purchased a Yellow Dolly 8/1971 GTR with all the original tags still fitted. The car is to be restored & I've been given the job for the engine rebuild, so I'm chasing info for the engine. It's fitted with a 173, which I believe is the correct for this vehicle. I don't think it is it's original engine, as I think it was replaced at some stage. Was the 173 a std motor as fitted to the LJ GTR's or did they have a different cam & WW Stromberg. What month did the Aussie 4 speed replace the Opel box.

Hi
Sorry but I beg to differ. The late LC GTRs had a 173S (CF prefix) with Aussie 4 speed but there was a transitional period where it appears that some Opels were fitted.
The LJ GTR was fitted with a standard 202 (not 173).

I would have to add to Bazza's post that the LJ GTR's also had a single barrel stromberg. As far as I am aware, only LC GTR's had WW Stromberg
cheers

he also wanted to know if the 173 in the LC GTR was a standard motor or was it modded and what carby / exhausts did they have.
I haven't ever seen one

Hi
The 173S (2850S) featured a higher compression ratio and modified camshaft over the standard 173. It had the same WW2 Stromberg carbie and the same cast iron headers as the 161S (2600S) The 161S developed 125 HP and the 173S 130 HP - the standard 173 (CD prefix) produced 118 HP
Cheers

Thanks mate, that was the info that I was chasing. I'm not sure what prefix 173 is in it at the moment, but the car was used as a daily driver until around 1990 & I think the motor was replaced with something like a GEM or Repco engine at some stage. The owner has several other 173 blocks for me to check out. I think that it still has the carb, air cleaner & headers in the boot.
