I have 2 x 4.2L badges that have come off Toranas I have owned over the years. Both are pitted and not pretty, so I wanted a nice new one for my current resto. I went to Rare Spares, and they wouldn't sell me one, saying that the reproduction HJ/X/Z 4.2L badge they sell is different, but they didn't know in what way it differed to a Torana one.

So my question is, what is the difference, if any, between a 4.2L boot badge off a HJ/X/Z and that off a LH or LX Torana?

I tried numerous searches and couldn't find any info. Apologies if this comes up often.....

I'll stop in there next week and do that. I should be able to compare original part numbers somewhere too. Surely Holden wouldn't make them different?

What? Come across someone with no clue? At a generic auto parts store who managed to get the prestegious job of being a rare spares stockist? No way in hell. Never in a million years would you meet someone with no less than the parts catalogues for every car made sine 1912 memorized.

Cheers.

Yea... this was Rare Spares Sydney. I kinda figured they would know their own product? The guy swore that Torana owners have said they are different, and "some guy" paid $100 for a second hand one, to get the right badge. This guy has been serving me at Rare Spares for over a year... so who is right? I can't find ANYTHING online to say they are different badges....

Factory LH-LX Torana & HJ-HZ 4.2ltr & 5.0ltr badges are one & the same. I've taken plenty of 4.2ltr badges off wrecked  Kingswoods & fitted them to my Toranas in the past. LH had one on each front guard & they seemed to get pinched on a regular basis back in the day, along with the metal SL/R badge that is fitted to the beaver panel.

Not calling you a liar matt, but i find it hard to believe anyone would pinch a 4.2 badge :tease:

Cheers.

True story, I couldn't work out who'd want a 4.2ltr badge either but then I remember the local Rare Spares dealer telling me that most of the GTR XU-1 & SL/R 5000 decals he sold were to school kids who stuck them on their school books etc. Then I worked with a kid straight out of school who had a collection of metal car badges from all makes & models Ford, Valiant, Holden etc. Seemed a popular past time where I lived for kids to rip badges off cars & collect them like footy cards.

Cheers guys. A wealth of knowledge, as always.

Surprised to get a bum steer from Rares.

Maybe the same rare spares guy in Sydney that told me their rad support section was perfect and don't believe anything you read on the internet, people on the internet have no idea what they are talking about. You've really got yo do your own research and armed with all that information make your own decision. And in my experience your decision will be the correct one. If the badges look the same they probably are, no chance of Holden tooling up for something different, but a HJ/HX parts book would tell all

Just think like you would if you owned the business (ie GMH). GMH would do what you'd do ie use the same badge for both Holden and Torana.

Spot on. Having worked for a GMH dealer for twelve years, I had a pretty good insight into their logic. You'd be surprised how many parts interchange between models, after all Holden was a part of GM so even parts from other GM products are interchangeable between some cars.

If LC/LJ lower front control arm bushes are the same as lca bushes for pretty well every H series, and the other toranas, and the same as the rear control arm bushes for pretty well everything from that period, and probably cross over to commy's (no idea there, but wouldnt surprise me) then i doubt they would re tool a badge haha.

Cheers.

Yep, there was a trend for some to turn them into belt buckles or necklaces but that would've been circa 90's and usually Euro or Jap cars.

I think these guys had something to do with it.
