Hi, just want to check that I have the heater hoses set up correctly. 74 LH, pre pollution. Do I need to have a twin outlet thermostat housing and run a bypass hose from it to the plugged water pump inlet? or is it ok to leave it as is?

Hi Graeme,
That setup looks good and is what I want to do.

Seeing as you are not doing restoration, do yourself a favour and fit the twin outlet with the thermostat bypass and junk that chrome neck.

The LH intake manifold used a single inlet thermostat housing.

The LX ADR27A version used a twin inlet thermostat.

Both setups basically do the same thing which is to allow coolant to bypass the thermostat via the heater. The heater on the LH/LX Torana does not have a tap to stop coolant flow through the heater.

The short hose from the water pump to the thermostat on the LX ADR27A version allows more coolant to bypass the thermostat than the LH version. Presumably this was done due to the slightly higher operating temperature of the ADR27A engines. Increasing the coolant thermostat bypass increases the coolant flow through the heads when the thermostat is closed. This provides a more even head temperature before the thermostat opens and reduces the possibility of hot spots.

As it is the the stock manifold then I would use the LX ADR27A version. You can buy reproduction hoses to suit the LX ADR27A version from sstorana.

leighlh, the hose from the water pump is original HQ. The thermo hose I went to supercheap and went through their hose racks to find one that was a similar shape. From memory it was some kind of commodore hose  I think!
