As the title suggests, I have a VT Wagon which makes a wuring noise at any speed above 80-90kmph.

It sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car.

Parts replaced so far.

Front and rear wheel bearings

CV drive shafts

Centre tail shaft bearing

Both uni joints.

Diff (second hand 60k)

Bit of history....

Car is 250k on the clock, had a diff whine since I purchased it (bout 220k on the clock).

I moved out to the country so conequently the car now spends most of the time doing 110kmph.

I may have overloaded it a little while towing some pine posts for a fence I plan to build.

I swapped out the diff and the whine is now gone, however ever since towing the heavy load there is another noise and I cant seem to figure out what is causing it.

Just recently rebuilt the front end, got new tyres and had a wheel alignment.

Other than this noise the thing drives like new.

Any ideas what would make a wurring type noise above 90kmph? doesn't change if I put it in nutral or drive while at speed... the noise it still there.

Thanks for any ideas

You're not meant to able to track down the wurring noise, It's installed at factory & intended to drive you crazy... Are you sure the neighbours cat isn't trapped under & being dragged along with ya ???

Just had it up on axle stands, wheels and brake rotors removed, ran it up to 100kmph +

HAS to be the tail shaft vibrating.....

Only thing left to replace is the centre cv joint in the tailshaft.

I don't know how to set them up, but I do know the universals have to be correctly phased, or you will get the problem you describe.

Was the tailshaft set up EXACTLY as it was, or just assembled any old way?

I will put money on that being the problem, seeing as how it has been apart.

                     regards,Rod.

Rob,

I was very carefull to mark each joint and re assemble excactly the same way.

The mark on the diff and mark on the transmision both lined up after I had dis assembled and cleaned the center cv joint.

I have oredered a new cv joint. If it's not the problem then I guess I'll have to fork out for a professional to have a crack at it.

I have no more theories.  Good luck.

Thank for your post Rod (sorry bout the Rob typo)

I've just spent the last hour looking up tailshaft phasing to get some propper data on what the Vt wagon should be. I can't find squat...It appears some models are set at different angles. Even so after re- assembly, I made sure the marks lined up....

Only thing I may have got wrong is the center bearing mount being slightly out. I didn't notice any adjustment provisions but it appears that it can be out somehow.

I'll put it back over the pit tommorow and see if I can shift it around.

Has the rear kframe been unbolted or losened to fit diff? may have upset alignment.

No,

I managed to replace the diff by only unbolting the 4 carrier bolts at the back, lowering the angle, then removing the 4 bolts holding the diff.

When I re-assembled I wasn't aware I had to line anything up, so possibly the diff is a little on the piss as well.

Thanks for the reply

Not the tyres, was making the noise before they where fitted.

Yes it has goofy arse roof racks.

Ran it over the pit without the drive shafts, it definately sounds like its coming from the centrer CV joint.

I'll know once the parts arive and are fitted

Are there any obvious signs that the tailshaft has lost some balance weights?

Not that I can see.

The tailshaft started to rattle at about 40kmph and be quiet at 100kmph since replacing the cv. I firgured I had not put it back together right so I checked it.

Turns out I didn't fully do up one of the bolts which hold the center bearing to the underbody (causing it to rattle at low speed). Since it ran quite at 100 when it was loose I figured it must prefer to be a little bit lower.

I put a washer between the underbody and the center bearing housing and the noise appears to have gone....

hopefully it stays gone.
