Hey all, was just setting the valve clearances with the YT adjustable rockers, looked up my cam specs on the crane cams site and it lists 0.026" while hot...

So im just curious why they have such a large clearance? I could understand if this was the cold setting as you dont want it to close up too much once it warms up but why such a big lash for when its already hot?

Does it actually get quite alot hotter when running hard under load and expands even more?

Cant answer the question but i think they might give those numbers to dial it in to give the duration as as per cam

taking the ramp of the cam into consideration.

The valves grow when hot as does the head so it is a bit hard to tell where they come from with the numbers.

Should imagine it might sound like a starfire with big clearance.

set the tappets at 27 thou warm motor up then reset tappets  the specs on the cam are correct I have a cam with 28 on exhaust and 26 on intake its so when everything warms up all the clearences close up due to parts swelling don,t forget to run cam in at 2000 rpm for 20 mins or you may wear lobes off cam if new

Yea but you are setting the clearances after everything is warmed up? So it wouldn't close up anymore then it is.

And yea its not a new cam, was just re-setting tappets after changing the head gaskets

Anyone? It is rather rattly and I would like to close up the clearances but not if its going to cause any negative effects...

I would cut that clearance in half and try it,then maybe measure it when hot just to be sure

there is still clearance...but that is just what i would do.

I have always used between 24-28 thou. @ operating temp. Do the spec the cam company advises then fine tune, but don't tune all the tappet noise out😩

From what i gather its probably best done on a dyno? Do a few lash loops and you will know where the engine wants them.....
