What width tyres for 7 & 8" rim?

Hey guys what size tyres can you run on a 16x7 and a 16x8 ? I'm hoping to put a 205 on (for the front). Can it be done?

I have 205's on my front 15 x 7" rims, so yes it can be done.

I have 205/45/16's on 16 x 7's on the front of my hatch (no flares), and have had 245/45/16's on 16 x 8's on the rear. Now running 16 x 9's on the rear with the same tyre.
Backspacing/offset will play a big part in the fitment though.

how much can you legally back space a rim? (Backspacing is putting a spacer between the axle studs and the rim? )

I'm a little confused on wheel terminology myself (wheel spacers?) but I think what you have described maybe illegal in some states. :huh:

Then again I could be wrong (as usual).

I'm really don't know but I'm sure someone here will be able to assist.

Backspace is the distance the rim is INBOARD of the hub, eg 10" rims could have 4" outer spacing (dish) and 6" Backspacing. The limit on backspacing in a Torana is generally the shock and spring in the rear.

Using spacers is generally illegal in most states. If the National Modification laws ever come into effect, it will be illegal in all cases except where factory fitted.

You can purchase a legal type of spacer, usually used to change pattern that has it's own set of wheel studs. It bolts to the existing studs and the wheel goes over the new set of wheelstuds. Unfortunately these have a minumum thickness which is generally too thick for average changes.

To answer your question, yes. I have 205/50 tyres on 16 by 7" rims on a lowered unflared UC. I have 225/50 tyres on the same rims at the rear end with no dramas.
