Standard V8 timing plate scale markings, is each mark 1 degree?
My distributor needs to be set for 12 degrees.

Each mark is 2 degrees. The big mark is obviously TDC

Wouldn't have had enough scale for 12 degrees otherwise.

you say the distributor needs to be set at 12 degrees. this isnt done at the timing marks on the engine.
there is initial timing, done on the engine timing plate, distributor timing, with msd done with bushes in the distributor and total timing that is both combined. what sort of distributor are you useing?

Using a bosch - holden electronic unit which has been reconditioned and recurved to suit my engine.
Will fish out the figures for it. Thought the workshop said 12 degrees.

Will drop it into the motor during the week.
Am I right in saying set #1 TDC - then back that 12 degrees - drop distibutor in for #1 firing point?
Im not an engine whizz so happy to get all the right advice I can.

Hi Michael, this is what i would do..i asume holden v8 yeah..take spark plug out of no.1(front lhs) you can also take lhs rocker cover off an watch the rockers on that cylinder till they are level(both same height)
1-rotate engine over by hand with a rachet on the balancer bolt till piston reaches tdc..use a torch to see the piston top
2-when you see that you will be close to tdc..then line up the balancer notch or line with the big mark on the timing tab(timing cover)
3-postion the dissy where you want it ie: so cap lines up where leads have to go and vacum advance etc..this might take a coupla goes
4-Bosch dissy's have a fine mark in the housing(where the cap sits on) you should line the rotor button up with this mark when the dissy is all the way in
5-turn dissy a touch(little bit) this will give you some advance..tighten clamp to "firm"
6-start engine and when warmed up point a timing light at the timing tab/balancer ..rotate dissy counterclockwise till you read 12 deg (2+2+2etc)
hope this helps its worked for me cheers

The other method I mentioned I got from a YouTube video, that maybe would have me a tooth or two out.

No.
You set No.1 at TDC and line the timing mark up ON THE DISTRIBUTOR with the timing mark ON THE ROTOR.
When you look at where the distributor cap lines up it should be somewhere between 10-12 degrees out depending what Bosche distributor you are using.
I can't be sure if the OEM initial timing marks are the same on the Cjina or aftermarket distributors.

Waiting for a set of spark plug leads to be made then need to add fluids and a few wiring checks before first run.
Car hasn't turned a starter motor for 10 years, should be awesome...
