Hi guys, I bought a Turbo 350 full manual box that came with a dominator top eliminator 8" 4500 rpm stall(anti balloning plate and mechanical diode). The stall was built to suit a 383 chev with nitrous. I talked to the guys at Dominator briefly and they mentioned it really is not for the street. I dont want to go against what they had said, but Im keen to hear other advice befor deciding to sell it.

My engine is/will be 355 holden, torque power hi rise dual plane possibly F280 cam etc.

Because this convertor was build for a 383 and gas, is it feisable to say the convertor speed will be lower, perhaps 4300?

Is this style of convertor a pig on the street.

Car will be used as a weekend car, a few drag meets, some street cruising, looking for low 11's in an LX hatch.

I have always driven fast cars but all manual, so this is my first performace car with an auto, wish me luck.

Advise appreciated.

cheers

Depends.

When i got the stall made up for my car I told them i wanted it to be streetable but didnt want to sacrafice on the strip, so they made me up a tightish stall that should go to about 4500 or so.

Didnt actually get a chance to street it, but just driving in and out of the shed a coulple of times it was fine, take your foot off the throttle at idle and she started rolling. Only got one skid before the combustion chamber turned into a sprinkler but she stalled straight up to the mid 4's on the brake so i recon they did what i wanted.

If its made up purely as a strip one it will be loose as buggery and pretty hopeless...Probably best to post it to them and get them to re tweak it, not that expensive.

Cheers.

I have a 4000 stall in my VX SS. Daily driver, stock engine for now. Leaves the lights driving normally at 1500rpm, at the drags today its flared straight to 4000rpm and pulled like a train. Mines in a 4l60e so I have lock up which is amazing.

Dont know if it really relates to your application but thats my experience. There are a few mild combos running around with 4500 stalls. Not dailys, but streetable. They just chew fuel

The reason they say to not drive it on the street is that they delete the sprag in the converter so you won't have any/much engine braking.
I went through this when I got my dominator built.

My old combo was a 330 with a crane 280 and I had a 5500 converter and 4.11 gears I drove it on the street all the time no problems .
You will find that converter will go no where near 4500 behind a 308 because it was built to go behind a 383 with gas that would make twice the torque your 308 would.
You should be able to send it to Dominator and get them to modify it to suit your combo

Thanks for the replies, I would send the convertor away but I have plenty of money to spend elsewhere at the moment. Just thought I'd gauge if I should use it or not, there is a b&m 3500 convertor avaliabe almost new at a reasonable price, but have heard mixed opinions about them.

Any one have much idea what rpm a 4500 convertor built to suit 383 with gas would stall to on a 304 or 355 roughly?

SA EH have you driven with the convertor without the sprag, what did you end up doing?

If you are going to get a new one, you are better off getting it built to suit. Mine was a touch over a thousand bucks with lockup from slingshot. Built to what my plans are for the car

My 8" dominator top line thig suit nitrous and transbrakes and the like was $860 delivered made to suit my car, right down to weight of the car diff gears tyre size etc.

Considering how much influence they have on the driveability of the car i wouldnt frOck around and jst get a new one like mitch suggested.

If your not running a transbrake or gas or the like you can get the lower model one which will prolly be cheeper.

I run a 3800 race style converter behind the LS in the LJ. It's pretty fun to drive. Ran a low 11 in its previous owners hands. No problem at all on the street but I don't do long trips.
Why not fit it and see if it is to your liking? As long as you are doing your own stuff all it will cost you is time if you don't like it.

You would be better off doing what someone else has already posted send it back to dominator with your engine and vehicle specs and they will mod it to suit your combo

I would stick with the dominator at least you know where to go if you have problems with it

I have 5k stall behind a 308 its a abit slippy more suited for the strip but i can still drive around the streets without any issues
