Same deal,measured 2 stock coils,41041B & 41039B


when measured between + and - terminals you get the low reading of primary winding.
when measured between + or - of primary to HT socket/post you get the secondary winding resistance.

 

in the the first case primary is 1.5...secondary is 9140 ohms
in the second case primary is 1.6...secondary is 8830 ohms

 

no reading from any other terminal to ground..however if on a points dizzy and points are closed you will get a reading from HT socket/cap to ground.

Something else worth consideration !...most coils were mounted on engine, either the head or block or valley cover...the reason being is that cast iron does not take to being magnetised as easily as soft iron and alloy even worse.


The core of the coil is a special iron that will not hold magnetism but can be easily magnetised, when trying to build a magnetic field in a coil the last thing you want is a mud guard or fire wall leaching off the system , although a lot of coils that are sold these days do mount in these places it may be they were designed to do so,,,shitty ol V6 como, where is the coil pack?

 

Have heard the odd story about guard mounted coils and problems but never able to confirm or deny the fault...was told about it so don't take it as gospel.

Well i  have  a very interesting follow up to this topic.

 

I bit the bullet and purchased the ICE race coil and booster assembly to match up with the ICE Dizzy ( it hurt my wallet)  , fitted it all up and as we are in a rush headed off round the corner to the dyno guy.

 

first run 180 , second run 188, third 177.

 

the guys gets out a says that something is wrong;

 

right air fuel all the way through.

 

He checks the new terminals that the electrician had wired up on top of the coil - LOOSE they weren't falling off just finger loose 

 

tightened up the wires then 203.5  HP at the back wheels.

 

I was amazed that this loose connection would cause such a loss of spark and hence this must have directly related to the size/ power of the spark at the other end.

I am interested to know if anyone has had an increase in HP following the 12volt to the coil mod? I just had mine done and while it appears easier to start I didnt notice any power gain. If there was I expect it to not be noticeable.
