Have had the old girl home for a few weeks now and got her all registered.

On my first trip to get a blue slip I noticed the rear left was rubbing ever so slightly on the flare.

Just on the tyre wall where it bulges out.

We had a suspicion it may just touch as the car has been lowered slightly and the diff has tracked to the left.

Why it has done this is beyond me. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to why they do this.

Anyway I really can't take any more off the flare and don't really want to.

I had a thought of machining 6mm off the inside of the rim to give it the clearance it needs.

I measured the wheel nut hole depth and it is 21mm.

Would taking this down to 15mm of material worry the rim.

Has anyone done this. What sort of place does this work??

Fit everywhere else is very good. just that rear left again coming back to haunt me as it did when I was a young fella.

Hi Steve, I don't like the sounds of that. One to two mm maybe but 15 I doubt.
Better off fixing the problem rather than masking it.
You will then have trouble with wheel rotations and fitting spares maybe.

He asked about taking 6mm, not 15mm. This area of a wheel is frequently machined to provide a particular offset, and there will be a certain amount of material in this area designed into the wheel to allow for this procedure, BUT you really have to find out what the minimum centre thickness as designed for the wheel is, a decent wheel shop that does repairs and modifications should know what's fair game.

Thanks Marty. Maybe I worded it wrong.

Hub cast total thickness is 31mm

The wheel nut holes are counter sunk 10mm

This leaves 21mm of material where the 5 holes are.

I was thinking about taking off 6mm to take the total cast to 25mm.

The material through the holes would be 15mm.

Just wondering what else I could do?

I have actually contemplated on getting new rims made but in this would mean a move away

from my beloved hotwires.

Cheers Mick.

I will do just that.

Off to the wheel shop.

I might actually pull all 4 off and check that it has not already been done

and it has not been noticed.

Aren't all holden diff housings offset?
As Mick said a wheel shop or repairer will know how much can be removed. I have done this in the past.
I know you said you don't want to trim the flare but that may be the only option with those rims. The top section of my flares only has about 3mm so I could run 295's
You don't see it when looking at it but not every ones cup of tea.

The way i see the back of your rims is that they seem to have a raised (1/2 inch?) annulus where the rim mates with to the rim? I think you may even find this is reduced or even non-existent on other similar Hotwires where it has been removed to create increases backspace.

Or run a slightly smaller tire? Slightly taller or stiffer rear springs?

Have you measured  the rims rear offsets to see if they havent been machined before?

Have you measured from axle flange to a datum point like chassis or wheel arch on each side to verify if its the diff offset?

If it turns out its the diff  thats outta whack then id be swappin trailing arms left to right first as a no cost starting point!

Just a idea anyway !

Bloody nice car mate anyway!

Yep...have machined a bit of the mounting pad of various rims numerious times. Just depends on the particular wheel and design to how much meat they have to remove. I don't know wheel places in NSW at all but imagine there would bound to be some up there that would be able to do it. Either that or a machine shop with a large enough lathe to chuck one up.

Just make sure that your lug nuts won't bottom out before tightening up with the reduced thickness there.

I can't remember off hand just how thick we left the wheel in that area when shaving them down, just off the top of my head it still looks like you'd have a decent amount of material left there.

Just to finish of what I did here.

I took my rim down to BSA wheels at Peakhurst.

They did it less than an hour for $66. Took off the tyre, machined it and put the tyre back on

and rebalanced it.

Did not damage anything either which left me feeling really happy with them.

I still think I could have taken more but started with 6mm.

Took it for a drive and it is much better. Christmas got in the way so I was unable test it out fully.

Will take her and put a full tank of fuel in next week and see how it goes but I suspect I could have done with a

slightly stiffer set of springs as well but it is a bit early to tell.

Thanks for the advice.

happy new year to all.

Steve

Hi Steve, that sounds like good value work there.

Hopefully it solves your problems.

Happy New Year to you
