I need a new carby for Tracie's car but not sure which one to get, I have a 750 vac sec Holley on it at the moment and was told it is too big for the 308.

It was suggested a 600 would be big enough but not sure what to get, one person suggests an Edelbrock and another a Holley.

Has or is anyone using an Edelbrock and if so how did it compare to the Holley.

I have a Holley 650 Ultra HP carby on my 308 and my engine was dyno'ed at 400HP on an engine dyno, and that's with HQ heads. I dont know anyone with an Edelbrock carby so can't comment but my Holley certainly works very nicely. Be prepared to pay big bucks for one though, I paid over $700 for mine. I just had a look on ebay for the one I have and the cheapest I could find was $950 so they must have went up.

Quickfuel are supposed to be good but I haven't used one before.

You could always go a cheaper Holley 600 after splashing out about $400.

The edelbrock is a copy of a Carter AFB pretty much. Seems to work well on pretty stock engines. They are a little fussy getting tuned right with large cams and what not (the vacuum signal seems to get confused on them it sorta seems like?) it has seemed to me... I have ran the Carters on various engines and cars and liked them for what they are. You can tune the AFB/Edelbrock with the metering rod/jet kit they sell if needed too.

I've got a couple second hand Carters there if you did wan to run one.. (750 and 625)

Dont over carb your motor Mort a 600 holley is plenty for a 308

Thanks for that Jeff, don't know if there is anyone in town that can tune the Edelbrock, come to think of it tunning a Holley might be a stretch for some of the mechanics as well.

Yeah Gene the engine came with the 750 and i was told it would be too big for it and to get a 600, i even thought about a 500 which i have sitting in the shed at the moment, i don't know the specs of the cam of the top of my head (away from home) but when i get a chance i will put the spec sheet up, was told be previous owner that it had a stage 6 cam????.

A 500 2bbl os not measured equally, they flow a lot less than a 465 4bbl.

2bbl carbs measured at 3" hg 4bbl are measured at 1.5".

Not having anything to do with cars, engines,etc over the last 20+yrs

I have forgotten most of the stuff i was taught while helping a mechanic friend when i was still at school.

You could bolt a 600 (be it Holley or AFB) on and go with just an idle mix adjustment and be pretty much ok to just cruise around.

Properly tuning it though..be it jets, accelerator pump, and power valve (Holley) or metering rods (AFB) is really the best way to dial it in for best power and economy even as well (don't want to be running way rich and waste fuel or be overly lean)

Don't forget to get the timing dialed in as well if the engine isn't going at the moment properly either.

The AFB style carbs use smaller primaries as well (Like Quadrajets too) so can be good on petrol when you are just cruising around with a light foot too..

I had a .500 lift and 300 degree duration cam in my car back when it had the original engine and I had ran both 600 Holleys and a Carter too for the heck of it. Seemed to have more grunt at higher revs with the Holley but wasn't terrible with the Carter either. (I had just played around with both at different points in time when I had them laying around)

Any tuned carb will out perform an untuned carb so these old mate went from Holley to Edelbrock and best thing ever comparisons aren't really any help.
Moral of the story, pick a decent carb and get it properly tuned to your motor.
Once you provide cam specs, the most appropriate sized carb and be determined.

Like Jeff said a quadrajet is another option, they're really suited to the holden V8. I had one on my 253 LX years ago and it was a mile better than the holley 750 that was on it.

Quaddy is my persoanal choice & are a great carb, smaller primaries than a WW2 & large vac secondary's with needles instead of a power valve like the holleys have.

So good for some economy.

Holleys are great cose they are so easy to strip & rejet etc

650 vac sec holley was the main swap on a stock/mild 308 that ive seem over the years.

A bloke down the road has edelbrocks (no idea of the sizes) on a stock 350 & stock 396.

i have no experience with edelbrocks

He likes them but he is strickly a cruiser.

If you cant find a secondhand carby in very good condition then id suggest buy new or fully recond job!

No fun whacking on the great bargin carby you just got only to find its a flogged out peice of pooo! :banghead:

And of course a vac secondary is better as an all rounder !

That's a pretty big hyd cam. Why not run the carb and see how you go? With the vac secondaries it may well behave quite nicely.
Carb sizing has lots of theories. I would personally give it a chance to prove its worth before spending any money.

Ok that will do, 750 it is.

I have it on the engine at the moment, it idles good and if you slowly bring the revs up it runs good but if i give it a quick rev it backfires big time.

I set number 1 to TDC on the compression stroke, fitted the new electronic dissy,timing mark is about 12-14 advanced.

Have i missed anything or done some thing wrong that will shed some light on the backfiring.
