Hi all, just wondering if any of you could point me in the right direction regarding lock kits for an LX torana.

I would like to know the best supplier with good quality and finished lock barrels.

I just bought a set from an ebay supplier and when I received them they where less than good....they had machining faults on the outer stainless covers where they were pressed onto the barrel and where very ripply even go as far as saying dented.

The finish wasn't very good either not very shiny.

Ive returned them and have received a full refund but the seller wasn't very happy and said 99.9% of there customers where satisfied with them...I wasn't and they where far below original finished lock barrels.

So I would appreciate some help if possible.

Cheers

Al

If you want OEM quality door locks, get 2 matching door lock barrels from a wreck & polish the outer. Get a boot barrel from the same car & polish it.

Take them to a locksmith & get a new key cut to suit them. Then use any ignition & glovebox barrel & get the locksmith to re-code them to match your new key. The reason for doing it this way, is that the ignition & glovebox barrels can be re-coded without destroying the outer stainless rim, which often happens when the door & boot barrels are dismantled & re-coded.

The barrel faces are stainless steel, & most new aftermarket stuff is a bit ordinary in its finish & their quality of construction is not as good as original GM-H.

You could try Kingswood Country

$110 a set (03) 9532 5806

Bettet Auto Rubber

1800 674483

$97.50 a set

Ace Auto Parts

(03) 9746 0091

$99.50 a set

What the quality of these set is like. I don't know, but I'm sure someone bought a set from one of these guys before & could put up there opinions.

You should be able to buy just the replacement stainless caps for door and boot locks from any locksmith (whether they'll sell them to you is another story), they weren't cheap for what you got but maybe that was just his way of discouraging public sales?

They don't crimp on as with OEM but have four tabs which you fold around the lock face. You have no choice but to destroy the original caps to get the barrel out if you need to rekey.

I used to rekey my own door/boot locks, it's really not that hard, all the tumblers are colour-coded. I used to collect the locks out of old doors at the tip (back when they use to let you salvage stuff) just to build up a stock of the different tumblers, I didn't bother getting boot locks as they only have half the tumblers of the doors.

Thanks very much Col.... I really only need door and boot locks with good stainless caps...I can get the ignition and glove box reset to the front doors later.

How can I go about arranging this with you...I'm keen.

Originally the glove box key is same as boot but I see the advantage of having one key do the lot if possible.

I believe the idea was so you could give a valet (or that mate everyone has who borrows things) the ignition key to drive and lock/unlock the car but he/she could get into the glove box or boot.

But one key that does everything is a lot more practical, at one stage I had two different cars with all the locks keyed the same.

I got some from Sparescity (eBay) but haven't fitted them yet, the only problem i have at the moment whit them is the gasket it is suppose to have 4 little slots in it but one one does.

One of the door locks has a little dent where the key goes in but other than that they look ok.

I tried my key today on ignition doors, boot & glove box same key on all locks.

I know I have one other key sum where that doesn't open the glove box but will start the car & open the doors.

This is the original set of keys as it still has the key number on & it hasn't been punch out.

Key number is written on sales papers.

Holden changed the key set-up around 7/76. Prior to that the boot/glovebox key was different to the door/ignition.

After 7/76 the keys were the same for all 4 locks, I believe.
