Most tracks have a common line for starting and finishing a lap. At Mount Panorama the finish line is located much closer to the final corner than the start line. This places it before all of the pit garages to ensure that cars entering the pit lane are recorded as having completed that lap. The start line for the race is located sufficiently far down the start-finish straight (toward the first corner) to ensure that cars at the rear of the starting grid are not too far around the final corner for the standing start.

I believe it has been done for the reason posted, it has been like this since the early 60s or before that even, AFIAK.

They always had big fields at Bathurst, so it makes sense to have the start line far enough along so the grid doesn't go too far around the corner.

I think that Oran Park also had their start & finish lines in different spots, but not as far apart as at Bathurst.

I spoke to a guy who was flag marshall at Oran Park thru the 80s & 90s & he assures me that the finish line was 20-30 metres or so, closer to the corner than the start line.

This conversion started when I made the comment about the Bathurst finish line, being unique in Australia, but he said no, Oran Park was similar.

Does anyone else on the forum here, know anything about this.

My recollection is they were the same at Oran Park.

There was a sign on the infield with Start/Finish on it and from memory it was a BP sign.

Will see what my old photos show though.
