At the top of the foot brake leaver (aka hand brake) is a plunger with a spring, what job does this play. Hopefully pic will help. From LX

The wire for the handbrake has a gold coloured fitting on the end of the wire with a hole in it... The hole in the fitting snaps over the end of the plastic plunger in your picture. It earth's when the handbrake is on to make the circuit (that's why the plunger is made of plastic...)

common part on most early hand brakes, little lugs that go through brass connector ring break and spring/plastic piece shoot out.
might be under seat or inside dash, wire should be dangling though,

dumb question Kazz from Adelaide but why is your time zone out by an hour?
day light saving?
