Good evening,
some excellent news the engine that i have been building is finally finished, its a fairly worked 186 with all the good bits. (eg, yella terra head balances blueprinted, cam, crank, extractors etc) It is in the car and going (fired first crank, not bad for a new engine) however, in the book we have it does not have the correct timing settings.
me and my father were wondering if anyone could give us an idea of the settings, any help would be appreciated.

Throw away the book on a hipo eng. It comes down to pinging. Set the timing as advanced as you can till it pings then back it off a degree or 2. The dizzy springs have a lot to do with the advance and are adjustable.

Standard was usually 6 degrees BTDC, on a worked engine it will be different. You could use 6 as a starting point?

it might pay in the end to have it dynoed and set up correctly as setting the stock setting dizzy above 6 deg will affect the total advance and this is the crutial setting and the rmp it stops at.
a dizzy maching can also be used to set up the dizzy but without the dyno you wont know what total advance works for your motor.
added benifit it that you will know if the carbs are working (ste up) correctly to.

Mine (179 bored to 186) with 350 Holley, zorst, elec dizzy and the rest, was dyno tuned earlier this year... My ignition timing is now set at 10deg btdc. Ran fine at 6, but works heaps better at 10. Never had pinging with either settings...

Cheers
Keith

Where is Mitiamo Victoria Australia? If you have those mods, I would get electronic ign too and get the dizzy graphed.
