Hi,

Any opinions as to whether or not this air con compressor mount bracket will fit a Commodore LS1?

I am not sure what the Camaro LS1 is like but looking at the picture this looks the same as the engine I am trying to fit in my LX so I think this bracket will fit.

Opinions welcome, thanks

The brackets above with fit an LS engine but it may not fit under the bonnet of a LX Torana.

I originally planned to use a high mount Sanden 508 compressor but I decided I would give the factory variable displacement A/C compressor a go instead as I preferred the low mounting. I have been told by some A/C guys that the factory variable displacement A/C compressor on the LSX motors is not compatible with a TX valve evaporator. Some others have said it may work and others have said it will work.

Dirtbag fitted a factory variable displacement A/C compressor with a TX valve evaporator in his brothers UC hatch. I would be worth sending a PM to see how it worked out.

This is my Sanden high mount setup. It just clears the bonnet with the rear outlet on the compressor. The compressor in the photo has the top outlet back fitted. I am looking to sell the high mount setup with compressor, backets and pulleys on the drivers side of the motor. I am not selling the idler pulleys on the passenger side of the motor.

I purchased the setup about five years ago from hotrodlane.cc

This is the setup on LS1 Hatch from this thread.

Thanks for the info Kev and LS2LXHatch
I had not considered the bonnet clearance issue yet.
I would like to use the Commodore compressor as I have one but gave heard the same.

Some say it is a great compressor and will work well others say it will not perform well.

Maybe the variable displacement could be controlled by the thermostat or be modified to a fix displacement if it is anything like a hydraulic pump.
will talk to some more air con people but will be a long time before I know any results

If you do use the factory A/C compressor then you will need to wire in a rpm cutout switch to switch off the compressor when the engine exceeds 4800 rpm.

Here are some pictures of the standard LS1 air con compressor in the lower mounting position.

Had to cut the mounting bracket back a bit to get past the Tuff mounts but it actually fits, hose connections point directly at the splash guards.

The factory compressor hose adapter will fit.

Alternatively you can get an 90 degree or vertical adapter to suit the GM compressor. Measure the spacing between the centers of the ports so you get the right adapter. It should be either 1 1/2" or 1 7/8".

The issues is see with using a variable displacement compressor are a few, they are a great comp and are great for efficiency. The do have problems though, they are prone to leaking around the body where the sticker sits. The controls valves also can lug up with oil and the compressor will fail to pull down the low side meaning your a/c wont work. They also use a low flow tx and I think it has more to do with how it controls  the control valve as it relys on pressures to make it work which by using a standard tx could also lug up the valve  Ve commys are electric which just make the idea even harder. The evaps are also very efficient and therefore will work at the pressure (28psi) that they are set at. 28psi is approx. 0 degree gas temp, if you have a poor heat exchanger which most aftermarket or factory units are the off coil temp will be higher so you may not get the temps required to work well. The pad fitting orings often leak.

This is all theory though and sometimes shit just works even though in principle it shouldn't.

Im looking at trying to adapt a sanden comp in the factory postion to suit a kingswood, they have clearance issues with the steering box. I think this way will just be easier than mucking around with the Delphi unit. I don't like the comp mounted so high on the engine either
