I thought you just tightened the belt for more whistle
I hadn't heard of the holes trick

I'm with Datto> Never herd about drilling holes.
I can varify that running the belt tight will make it whistle more. It will wear out your pullies a lot quicker but who cares it sounds fat cracking good :spoton:

You can only tighten them so far though ... The last one i set up had the belt ROCK solid, and still wasn't really that loud of a whistle.

I have heard people drill these holes in the pulleys (with superchargers too) to actually reduce the noise but I have never tried.

Try the widest belt that will fit your cogs.

I love the sound of both that's why I have both, lol, but straights cuts take a little longer to wear in and start making the noise rather than the gilmer, just whack it on and tighten and love that sound. As for drilling holes in new gilmer pulleys, never heard of it, I think your best trying to tighen the belt a bit more before you get the drill out.

Maybe he needs straight cut timing gears and a supercharger with the widest gilmer type belt available
That should give enough noise

What causes the noise is the air getting trapped between the tooth of teh belt and the pulley.. Or in teh case of a straight cut gear drive.. the two gears.

Tightening the belt will squeeze the air out harder.. thus more noise!

Drilling holes could only serve to let the air out below the tooth and thus quieten it down.. Straight cut gears on the other hand are just damn noisy ( I should know.. my PJ gear drive whistles like a dying cat.. but Geez i love the sound!).

Cheers!

Sorry, slightly off topic but along the lines...

Tiny you never get tired of the straight cut gear noise??
I wanted them on mine but everyone tells me I will get sick of the noise and want to change them back. Talking a lot of road use here not drag ;)

hatchman: I actually like cats mate ;) But i'm a shooter too so yeah have heard my fair share of yelps!

Herne: Yeah everyone tells me you'll get sick of it.. but in all honesty.. when its on teh road.. Nah i like it.. You really dont hea rit much in the cabin.. infront of the car yes!

And ot does make it a pain in the bum to work on the running engine.. Forget trying to tune carbies or change timing by ear... all you can hear is the whir!

LOL Simmo summed it up :) Who needs a stereo with all this mechancial music being created hey!

Cheers :spoton:

I can only just hear my belt when im cruisin', Although It's pretty loud when out of the car, but I find it hard to believe im gunna get sick of it. I near break my neck when I hear something with straight cuts or a gilmer coming along the road.

My car isn't that loud compared to most old School V8's, but it has got a note to it and is kinda loud after being in it for a while so I put a cheap tape player in just to cut out the noise of the car when cruising, but guess what, lol, didn't work, can only hear the tape player when the car is Idling. Guess I might need to fork out some dollars and get a nice little Cd player, but I guess "Mechanical Music" will do me for a fair while yet....

Just kinda back to original topic... If it's any help, with the last one I helped sort out, we had to slot the alternator bracket further so we could get more adjustment out of it. Made it alot louder when we did that.
