hey so I got my cam back from the shop today and am planning to put it in asap and see how it runs anyway hears my question

I have a blue motor with a four barrel holley , extractors and a few other small mods but for the most part all stock internals. I will be putting in a Wade 373 grind cam the lift at the lobe is 286 and the duration 304.
I was told that I may find it hard to drive in town with this grind as I have a tri-matic in the car and I was recomended to put a high stall conveter in it, do You guys think I will have trouble with out the high stall conveter or not?

If I have the motor out to do the cam I would like to figure out the box at the same time maybe I could put a m20 in but I not sure if i want to spent the $$$ to convet to manual yet but a high stall conveter is not cheap either.

so I guess any advice would be great

cheers guys

if the cam grinder/supplier reccomends a stally then thats what you need.
you will still be able to drive the car but the idle and off idle performance will be poor possably to the point of the motor stalling at worst but more than likley requiring two foot driving ie brake and accelerator to keep it alive and get it off the mark. not fun in a daily driver.

sounds good :P hopefully u get more ponies

Get a stally, i recon there really important when u mix an auto with a big cam.
find out the cam rpm range.

gud luck!

Here is an explanation if required. A big cam means that your engine has lower vacuum at standard idle. Because of this is has lower power at standard idle. So when you select a gear it will have a tendency to want to stall at standard idle. Say a stock motor idles at 650rpm, you select drive and the rpm would drop to around 600rpm. With a big cam it will be happier idling at around 850+ and would drop around 200rpm when drive selected. The bigger the cam the more it will drop. Get it? A high stall convertor allows more "slip" in the converter when you engage a gear to over come this problem.

I have a very similar cam in mine with a fair amount of headwork and 20 thou over pistons running a trimatic and 3.5 gears.
I was told to put in a 3000 or 3500 stally to utilise the cam.
I went with the 3500 as i will no doubt mod the motor again as time goes on.

havnt run it yet but seems to go great on the street.
Just need to learn how to drive with a stally again!

thanks guys that gives me something to work with I think I found a m20 box for it today but I only have a red fly wheel and clutch from a 186 will this fit on a blue motor I guess blue motor fly wheels are the same as red ones and the clutch is out of a sunbird box will I need to change these or will all these bit bolt up and work for me, I priced a high stall converter and it will cost me $400 to get one made for it so stillworking out what I can afford to do

any advice is helpful

my personal opinion is by the time you put together a second hand clutch and i dont think the flywheel fits (please correct me), throw out bearing, then probably find something wrong with the clutch and need a newy, anyway what im getting at is that im not a big fan of the aussie 4 speed and unless the second hand clutch is known to be good then go new/reco which starts to make $400 for a stally sound good.
dont get me wrong, i prefer manuals, just not aussie 4.

you also have to ask yourself what condition your auto is in.

just a thinking ive seen celica 5 speed coversions for around the $400 mark.

I live in New Zealand and $400 bucks will not get you very far here with a celica conversion. but I see your point I will look around and see what I can come up with thanks for the input

cheers guys

Both red and blue flywheels fit each other (I've got a blue motor flywheel on my red 173) but the blue motor flywheel is lighter, about XU1 weight, and also comes with a 9" clutch as opposed to the red 8.5" clutch. The reason for the reduced weight on the blue motor is to counteract the extra weight of the counter weights of the blue crank. With a warmer cam like yours I would recommend at least the standard blue flywheel but it would probably help to go lighter again to make the engine spin faster.

Getting back to the original post, I hope you are replacing the lifters on your "new" cam? Could be instant disaster if you dont.

And new valve springs if you can afford it. Not essential, but won't feel like a nice new crisp engine if you use the old valve springs.

shipping to NZ I dont think would be cheap. The box would have to weigh a fair bit.
I have three prospective buyers at the moment anyway .Sorry. Just waiting for the first person to let me know when he is cashed up.
