I think the cars are just tendered out these days...
Auction houses like Pickles, Manheims etc seem to get them regularly.
As for the lost, found, stolen etc goods auctions, they appear in the Sydney papers from time to time....or on Google

what are you after specifically.....run around, performance car...bric a brac, lost and stolen stuff?
I have bought several Commodores from the ex Gov Auctions over the years ( VN Berlina, VR Acclaim, VX SS ), generally painless, most still with some factory warranty. Have never bought an actual cop car as they are typically pretty rough around the edges.
Have also used their drive in trade in on the day system ( you only get straight wholesale price, but makes it easy to drive in old and drive out new-ish)
Have also bought a Camry for my wifes friend...she had if for around 7 years with not a problem.
Have found you need to go a few times to get the feel for whats going on, as there seems to be people paying more than full retail? + then they have to also pay the ""buyers premium"" on top of that??
Can only assume they are dealers or "VIP"s or whatever that are some hidden discount structure that the average punter doesnt see.

Nah, there used to be "trade-only" auctions but the auction houses figured out they can make more money when two idiots... err I mean members of the public... just 'have' to have something, whereas dealers know exactly what something's worth (and whether there's a market for it) and bidding tended to stop at a certain level.
Auctions tend to be dumping grounds as far as dealers are concerned. There are wholesalers that buy and sell between dealers so most dealer stock never sees an auction, or if there are any little gems they get picked out by the wholesalers before they get to auction, again most of the gear that makes it to auction day is stuff dealers don't want anyway.
