was wondering if the steering shaft spline size and diameter change from car to car or is this identical from the 60's right thru to the 90's.
i have seen a GTS wheel on a VK but never got to ask the owner if it was a dodgy fit.
anyone had a go at swapping bosses and the like?

HT,HG and HK are the same spline as LC but from LJ to VL they used a different spline... Dr Terry would be the guy to ask...

Hi Guys.
The actual shaft & spline size has been the same for many years, but it's the blinker cancelling mechanism, column shroud size, position & the steering lock design that gives the drama.
To answer the question HK/HT/HG, late HB & LC wheels are all interchangeable. All LJ to UC, HQ to WB & all VB to VL Commodores will interchange. Haven't heard anything about the VL Calais being different. Later Commodores are different again & it gets complicated with air bags etc.
There is one slight difference on the LJ to VL type that can be annoying sometimes. The horn ring, that's scewed to the back of the steering wheel, comes in a few varieties. The 2 lugs that perform the blinker cancelling operation are differently spaced, depending on what type of steering the car has. This is because different steering boxes or racks have a different number of turns lock to lock, which makes a difference to when you need the blinkers to actually cancel. For instance an HQ without power steering, has a different horn ring to an HQ that has power steering. A Torana ring will be different to a Commodore ring, yet they both use racks. How many have not noticed that before. It's an easy fix just make sure, when swapping wheels, that you keep the horn ring that matches your car.
