Hey guys,

What techniques are you using to clean (de-carbon) your engine? ie. tops of pistons, cylinder head chamber, heads of valves.

I've read it's quite common to very gently trickle some water down the carb whilst engine is running.

Subaru also sell a dedicated spray can product which is very popular. Apparently it's meant to be connected to a vacuum line and sucked through. Would this be suitable for spraying down a carb into a V8?

Any other techniques? Some people say there are also soaking products.

I just want something I can do every 5,000 kms or so for pro-active maintenance. My engine runs on the rich side, so always has its fair share of carbon buildup. This can also increase the chance of pinging.

Yup, water, I've not done it, but the guy that did my original heads commented to give it a go with water after he found out I ran the heads for a bit with no guide seals. Have seen others use water on an engine and its a huge surprise how much they can tolerate if they have a bit of RPM on, was literally a garden hose on low and a finger to get it to spray a bit. 

 

Maybe a water injection kit as was the go on the older turbo kits on Holden 6's etc may be a good place to start the search.

Mist spray water or, believe it or not, carby cleaner, it dissolves deposits, either or both on a hot running engine.
You should see the shit that comes out of older engines with a good dose of carby cleaner.



Load the engine up whilst spraying (not enough to hydraulic) keeping the revs up as it dies for a minute or so then some big WOT revs.
Works ok, but nothing like removing the heads and using a wire brush.

The Subaru product is very good, use in a well ventilated area and it's fine to spray it down a carb, just direct the nozzle at each intake runner for a few seconds at 1800-2000rpm. Our if you know someone who knows your local Wynns rep ask them for some EGR clean. Similar product and just as potent.

Tune the engine and run a detergent oil so the problem goes away forever.

oldjohnno - a tune is definitely on my list, but never heard of detergent oils. More info?

Diesel engine oil works well.

Yep,with oldJohnno and Terra with the Diesel oil, only on new-ish engines though, that's why it always looks so black. That's what I've always run in my engines,since I was an Apprentice at a Farm Machinery place and got it free, but every rebuild on the Torana motor, no carbon build up anywhere.

I use Subaru upper engine cleaner to decarbon pistons/rings/etc, about $20 a can from Subaru spare parts.

 

They use it in WRX every service.

 

I don't think i would try anything else as this works very well.

My mate Gino the" specialista mehanick" reckons you just valve bounce them on the road test after the tune up, or do a long burnout maaaaaaate, before you give the car back to the client

I've used Gino,    his apprentice & his mate did burnouts in my car,    without Gino knowing,   When I complained about my tyres being shredded, Gino got the apprentice - beat the crap out of him FIRED him on the spot ( beat him so bad , the cops got involved )   True story,    A Diff service shop in Dandenong VIC.    ace,-      was many years ago.

 

As for removing carbon deposits,   I'd rather not have loose carbon deposits and just leave it as is,

They be the same mekenics who's grease and iol change is checking the dip stick and wiping a bit of grease on the nipples?

Terra that's the one , sent the missus down last time and she said he ruined the front of her new jumper trying to put the grease on the nipples.
