Only diff I know is that El thermos are physically smaller.
After some advise on what works better, flows more CFM, and for fitting into a LH

Mondeo fans even better fit and flow up to 4000CFM.  Have used them with great success.

You will find pictures of the AU and Mondeo fans here. There is also a brief explanation of the modifications required to fit the AU fans.

 

 

Another option is SAAB fans which are discussed in this thread along AU and a few other options.

Ef/el are wider than the au"s as the fans are almost level where as the au"s are more staggered, the au"s fit better onto a torana /kingswood radiator. Also look at ba twins(pretty much the same as the au's) and bf single as other options
