We had a small under bonnet fire due to a fuel leak. Originally it was just fix what was needed. Three days later we had second hand front and rear bars, a second hand bootlid and decided to attempt to fix all panels to "tradesman standard". So three months on, it's almost complete ( I wasn't going to practice on a Torana! ). We also decided to paint the entire car. Once again, I need to practice on something. At least one panel needs to be taken back to bare metal. So worst case scenario, how much primer, undercoat, topcoat, clear and thinners would I probably need? Just remember, this car is a practice run and I'm attempting a "tradesman standard" finish.

The car was originally yellow, so I'm only doing what will be seen at 80 KPH. As I said, it's a practice run and I want it finished sooner rather than later.

Actually, I'd better do a test on the old bumper first to see the colour difference. So an estimate on an outside only job and doing it inside and out all over would be a good idea.

Right.

Epoxy primer will depend on exactly how many big bare metal areas you end up with.

Just one panel, a 1.25lt kit will do. A few more, just get a 5lt kit.

High fill urethane primer, again, cant see the car, no idea how good the panels are or how good your bog work or feathering is, but get a 5lt kit.

Top coat, 3lt + hardener for outside only, 4-5 for inside outside. THats being a bit conservative, most yellows are fairly translucent. Do a test piece, and try it over both grey and white primer. If you have various rub throughs, spot putty spots, etc, and the yellow is somewhat translucent, you will have issues. Really hard to judge from this end of the comptuer screen.

Looks liek a solid color, ie no pearl or metalfalke, so no clear required.

Thinners, depending on which paint brand you go with you may need a different thinner/reducer for each product, or may be able to use one. Work on 25% across the board as an average of how much you will need.

Few litres of GP thinners for cleanup, and few litres of prepsol as well.

Most yellows are fairly translucent.

I shuddered when I read that. So I sat down, had a couple of beers and decided to take the entire car back to bare metal ( and plastic ). As I said earlier, this car is only a practice run. But I'd rather practice by painting two cars once, than paint one car twice.
