Hey guys/girls.
Had a new system fitted to my car today...but we ran into a problem..the 9" is just too big under the hatch and was making it a nightmare to fit the zorst. The workshop manager said he could do one but would have to be mandrel bent and left there for a day or too. He didnt want to fit a system that goes under the diff, as he said it causes too many probs with clearances etc.
I left it and just had the 2 pipes exit just under the diff but pointing flat, not dumped onto ground.

Has anyone else had issues fitting a full exhaust system on a torry with a 9" ???
Also, if anyone has any pics, could you please post of provide links to help give me an idea?

Thanks people

Matt

Man this use to be a classic thread on the old forums.

Not a lx but I had the exhaust go under the diff on my lc,no problems with clearances, just have flanges fitted before the diff so that it makes it a lot easier later on if you have to work on the back end of the car.

problem no.1. exhaust under diff with solid read axle street illegal. (due to diff travel in suspension travel interference).
problem no.2. exhaust exiting straight under car causes heat damage to anything its pionting at in a very short time. ( also illegal).

try more opinions and more quotes.

Since when has exhaust under the diff been illegal?

I had a single 3" under the diff in my LJ and it scrubbed probably once but with a whole car load of people. Over the diff looks to be impossible.

I cant see how it cant be fitted, I know of at least 4 guys in the club with exhausts going over the diff. I will see if anyone has pics.

When I had my old SLR it had a banjo then I fitted twin 2-1/2inch system-no probs fitted the 9inch and it hit, so had the pipes done under the diff, its not illegal-in this state- to have pipes under the diff if done right my car went through several inspections and never once got defected for pipes under the diff

Thanks for the feedback guys.

rear pipes
This is a pic of how it is set up atm. Its just a temporary thing as i just couldnt leave my car there for a couple of days. So once i fly back to work the car will go back into the shop so they can do it. If your wondering why its pointing flat and not dumped is because i actually asked for it. When dumped on the ground (as it was previously) it was VERY droney inside the car, sounded like shit and would boom and ecko under the car when stationary.....EVERY cop would look at it and i had been pulled over twice and told "mate, fix that or you WILL receive a yellow sticker"
Its had flanges fitted at front and back so that the system can be completely dismantled if i need to work on it. :D
The exhaust fitter said it CAN be done, but must be mandrel bent. He had 3 attempts to make it fit (actually made 3 sets of pipes) but at best would only get around 10mm of clearance and he said he wasnt happy with that as he wont let the car out of the shop if he knows the exhaust is going ot hit and rattle...which he believed it would.
The shop has done alot of custom systems here in perth and are a great bunch of guys, so im definately not knocking them, heck they even took $100 off the price because it wasnt how i wanted it. :spoton:

Just knew ALOT of people run 9" diff's and wondered what they had done to overcome the prob and also.....if maybe my diff is positioned wrong ie: few mm too far forward etc????

Thanks for the info and pics guys.

PS: LJ355 - VERY neat looking ride mate.

My advice is to go under the diff too. I also have twin 2.5" tailpipes under my 9", no problems at all. Plenty of clearance, no heat issues at all, this passed roadworthy inspection with flying colours, and then got fully engineered like that too. Flanges before the diff make it a pleasure to work on, a few minutes work and the tailpipes are off the car. Yes, tailpipes over the diff can be done, but are going to be a very tight squeeze, and also a pain to remove/work on, not to mention heaps more expensive....

HI

I built a 3" system complete for my old LH 4 door 308 with muncie, went over a 9" diff and around a drop tank with heaps of clearance.

I just purchased a few 45 deg and 90 deg mandrel bends and THICK wall pipe to suit. Cut and shut bends till it all went together in the right spot. Wish I had a hoist, layed under the car for MANY, YES MANY nights from memory till I got it right. Two local exhaust shops said it couldn't be done, :tease: HA HA.

Consisted of HM L34 style extractors into a twin 2.5" to 3" collector, single 3" muffler box and then 3" up over and around, beeeeeautiful. It did take some time but it was worth it.

I still have the full system unused, it is going into my 77LXSleeper  soon I hope. Did run the car with it all together for 20 min to run the cam in, I think I could have sold the sound on E-bay, would give you a woody in your pants from a mile away.

If you want some pix send me your e-mail address and I will send them to you. Sorry I have not learn't how to post pix on the site as yet.

Cheers
Jaimie

I know your troubles, think it has a lot to do with ride height, with standard springs and the 9 inch, my father had the exhaust done and it fit, but cost a fortune. I lowered the car with not really thinking about it as a problem and quickly ran into them. Had to remove the rear sections over the diff and just placed little dumpers out the two mufflers before the diff. Pretty much it was dumping either side the rear Uni Joint.

It Sounds fat as, more than likely illegal, but real deap throaty, worth the risk.

I got a 3" pipe under my BW diff, engineer liked it, just have to be 100mm above the road, when welding up the pipe/mounting the pipe to the bracket make sure the diff/suspension is set to when its loaded.
