I'm running 265/50/15s on the rear of my unflared hatch ( standard width 9in , no tubs 8in rims )
it only rubs if I hit a decent bump in the road with someone ( over 60kgs) sitting in the back seat

I have a Toyo T1-R Proxes 235/40/17 on a 8" rim with at least 10 mm clearance all round when sitting on the bump stops. The rims where made to center the tyre in the wheel tub.
The overall width of a 235 tyre can vary significantly from one tyre range to another and one tyre brand to another. The rim diameter, width and tyre profile will also cause variations in overall width.
There is not much clearance to be gained from rolling or trimming the rear guard on a LH/LX as the rear guard steps in just above the lip. Rolling the guards will however reduce tyre damage if they rub. It is reasonably easy to make a mess of rolling guards if you don't know what you are doing.
