Hey everyone,

I'm beginning to get to a point with my LH where I'm looking into a diff/brake upgrade and I'm not sure the direction I should take.

Current set up is a mild 308 backed up by a trimatic then through a v8 torana tailshaft to the good old banjo, which is a fine spline 3.08 center and axles set up. Brakes are standard discs front and drums rear with a v8 booster for extra oomph.

Now the brakes just aren't cutting it so I'll probably look into doing the HQ disc conversion at the fronts but seeing as I want to do something to the rear (maybe discs also?) AND I plan on getting more work done on the engine in the future, I figure a diff upgrade is a good idea to prevent future issues.

My question is, is the price difference at a shop between a 9" conversion and a BW conversion massive or much the same? (Including parts, labor etc). I'm thinking if I send it to a diff shop to get it done (which I will have to as I don't have the skills or room at my place) if the cost is similar or slightly more expensive then why not go to a 9". Remember, I'm planning on upgrading the rear brakes at the same time so that it's off the road once only.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Ok,.using a 9in is easy for ratio changes and with your drivel line you mention you will never hurt it,..the 9in carry's a lot of weight compared to the borg warner,..i personally like the borg warner cause its fairly strong and light weight,..it has a better limited slip than the 9in but is a pain in the arse when changing ratio's...both can use 28 spline axles...the 9in being a lift out centre the same as the banjo and the borg warner being a salisbury meaning its centre is bolted internally inside the housing is that when working everything literally has to be removed...you won't go wrong either way as you bolt whatever brakes you choose on either diffs ...your dilemma is price..hope this helps.

Hmmm...I reckon a BW with an lsd might be the way to go.
The reason is I have no interest ongoing above a 3.08 ratio, plus I'm never planning on turning the thing into a street machine, I still like my cruising, burnouts and drag racing are not my thing...plus it has a trimatic in it....

How much hp is the BW good for?

For what you said your requirements are, I would be going BW. Also When you buy the donor diff from a commy your basically getting the disk brakes and handbrake setup you need already. And most likely at no extra cost.

What BW am I best going for? Commodore? Skyline? I'm the kind of person that likes to spend money once is all...

Is it possible to do the conversion and keep the Torana stud pattern? I've got some nice wheels on it currently that I'd rather keep

Rory & some other guys here did a good budget diff conversion think they used skyline diff..good thread on forum worth reading.

B/w diffs dfor commodores & parts starting to get bs prices..if sticking with common size wheels should work out simple.

If you decide custom sized wheels then get wallet out custom sized diff required with bill to match.

I used a VS LSD with discs had it shortened to Torana length with billet axles and is fine to around 500hp but if you drive it hard (or going to) go 9"👍
