G'day all

Had a look at my tires the other day and found that even though I had a wheel alignment done about 6 months ago and it did have negative camber (you can see it and I saw the sheets) I have still worn the outer edges of the tires much more than the inside. Does that mean that to get more even tire wear I need more negative camber, if so how much?

G'day peter,

The UC's went back to having the upper control arms mounted in the upper most mounting position which make the wheels gain positive camber when you corner or hit a bump - hence wearing the outside edge. You can either remount them lower to improve things (free other than a fair bit of fart arsing around)
or you could fit a spindle extender but that is also a bit of work since the guy at TSS doesn;t sell them anymore and you would have to do as I have and get chromoly ones from promotorsports in the US and machine the top taper to suit a Torana balljoint and a few other bit and pieces. and they cost a fair bit too. $180 or something from memory.

I ran my LX with +0.5 castor and -4.5 camber. A bit extreme, but I liked it and it worked on my car.

I would say it means you have too much toe-in. Get the alignment rechecked. To get even tyre wear with about 2-3 degrees neg. camber I would suggest about 4-5 mm toe in.

During my 21 years in the tyre industry, I generally set the LH - UC Toranas at 2.5 MM toe in, regardless of camber or castor settings. It's not unusual to have a car checked on 6 different machines and get 6 different readings, so anything posted on these forums should be taken as a guide only.

TOE IN??????????? hes wearing the OUTSIDES of his tyres.....i would say that means he has too much toe in NOW......and excessive toe in will make it plough understeer like a b$%ch..... a lil toe OUT will make it turn in nicer and wear the tyres more evenly i feel...it worked on both my previous LX's..oh that and about 34 psi in the fronts

Hi Guys.

I'm with Chopper on this one, all Toranas work well with 2 to 4 mm Toe-In. These are street cars looking for maximum tyre life, not racecars.

As a matter of fact I can't think of too many RWD street cars that run any Toe-Out at all & still get the tyres to live.

By the way, I've been in this game for 30 years, this month & that's way too long for my sanity.

i think he meant less toe-in, not necessarily toe-out?
