As the heading suggests I have a leaking rocker cover on my 202,i had one of those aftermarket chrome ones on it for a start,so I turfed that,i now have what I believe is a genuine holden chrome one on it ?? mainly because it has the wire tabs and it has a proper baffle in it,i have tried about 3 different gaskets and what seems to happen is they shrink and leak, the one I have one at the moment had shrunk to the point of I tightened the bolts up by about 1 1/2 turns,i have used the old remedy of putting grease on it to no advantage, apart from using 3 tubes of silicon I'm buggered if I know where to go from here, never had one leak like this, any one had this trouble ??

This could be a long shot, I had a cover rub thru from a rocker just touching it at the end, , it turned out to be a 186 cover on a 173, bridges to rockers re different covers

Is the cover straight and true?
I use the old aviation form a gasket (permatex no.3) for this sort of stuff and it seals fine with a cork or rubber gasket.

Hello Phillip,

I always soak the cork/rubber gasket in water for half hour or so before putting it on,

this allows the gasket to form well before dying out, stays put when taking the cover off again for re-use too.

If the clamping area is bent/warped where the bolts go then you need to massage it back to flat so you get good even clamping pressure the whole way around.

If you are using wingnuts to secure the rocker cover get rid of them.

Will always get leaks with them.

I've had problems with roller rockers smacking baffles or aftermarket rocker covers warping or cracking because of it but never had them leaking using cork gaskets & holden rocker cover bolts with brown gasket goo stuff.

I use contact adhesive to glue the gasket to the rocker cover. Tighten then re-tighten after initial warm up.

Soaking them in water is for old school cork gaskets. I don't think you could buy one like that these days. The are usually rubber impregnated.

Can I ask how tight should the bolts be? I've just realised mine are loose... no torque wrench :)

Cheers, Nick

Tighten them until they feel right, then do another full turn, which will mean they loosen up, then do another 1/4 turn. Good as gold.

All jokes aside, no torque wrench needed, just nip them with a 1/4 inch ratchet evenly and in star pattern. If it still leaks you have other issues. Its not a cylinder head just a cork gasket.

Do what Rob said, contact cement and glue it to the cover, make sure the bolt hole area is not pulled down. Tighten gasket to achieve approximately one third compression of the gasket, if you're real worried use some permatex on the head side of the gasket as well.
