Hi, Im about to put reconed heater box back in Torana LJ and was wondering if I required a rubber or foam square seal to go around the main flapper door that protrudes through the plenum plate. This is not the one that goes on the one on top of the fan cover. I have done a couple of these over the years but cannot remember how this was sealed. You do not get a seal in the heater box set to do this. Maybe it was originally sealed with mastic type sealer? I have expansion foam which makes a great seal but am worried that I may not be able to push the heater back towards the plenum to get the bolts to drop through the fire wall top. I have made all the other gasgets from the foam rubber which is about 12 mm thick and it flattens out great when compressed. If anyone has the right thoughts as to what goes in this joint it would be a great help to me. Regards Graham

Ive removed mine also ready for resto......not easy to remove a very heavy duty sealer was used originally....43 years later it was still very sticky...id be keen to know the answer to your question as i will also need to know once re assembly begins.

Thankyou S Pack, IThat is what I wanted to know, will go and cut a nice rubber seal and then do a dummy fit up before final fitment. The rubber I am useing is the black 150 mm wide expansion joint rubber used in cementing floors it seems to do the job nicely. Thanks again Hommie 1973

Great thanks for the pic....yes that reminded me that i had to cut mine, but i did keep it to use as a template, it was discussed when removed and i had forgot, i will head to shed and label it now.

12mm thick may not be enough. To compress the seal you may need it to be around 20mm thick.
That original seal also has the remnants of Holden's grey Flexomastic on it plus it appears it was also contact cemented to the heater box flange flange.

Hey S Pack, I did have to double the 12 mm and glue them together and then use sanding wheel so I think your 20 mm was about spot on. I glued it to the heater box and I put it all together. So it is all in now and is working great. Cheers Hommie 1973

My original is 12mm soft rubber, the one I got with the seal kit I 9mm foam rubber.
I haven't installed it yet, but it looks like either would work.
My original does not look like mastic was used.

That seal in Dave's pic didnt come with the seal kit I bought, I used the original from my car. From memory my seal kit was from a forum memberwho sells them on ebay. Buggered if I can remember who.

Doesn't have the round pads for the bolts.
I'll probably use the original seal for the blower outlet as well.
I'm yet to source the internal foam.
