With or without scratching the paint?

A hair dryer, plastic scraper and plenty of newspaper to get the worst of it off then plenty of kerosene and rags.

Diggers Paint Stripper from Bunnings is the go.  Turns the stuff to a gluey sludge that can then be easily scraped off with a plastic bog applicator.  Then more stripper and steel wool and finally stripper and paper towels will have it all gone.

Need to use gloves while using paint stripper cause if it gets on your skin you'll know about it.  I use nitrile gloves cause that's what I have for painting etc.  And boy does that stuff stink.  I also use a respirator that includes a carbon filter suitable for spray painting.

Diggers 1L Paint Stripper

3M Tekk Protection Half Face Spray Paint Respirator
(Can also get filter refills for this)

3X PKT of 10 Body Filler PLASTIC APPLICATORS

Edit: Ooops, just noticed you need the paint to stay behind

Kero will be easier on the paint than petrol and under no circumstances use paint thinners unless you don't give a shit about the paint.

Yeh, my suggestion was more for the stuff under the guards and where it's to be repainted.

Kero or Prepsol will dissolve the tar and should not damage the paint. Another option is to try some of the bug and tar removers like Auto Glym Intensive Tar Remover. Using any sort of scraper will most likely scratch the paint.

What about dry ice and isopropyl alcohol?

Thanks again for all the ideas which I have now acted on. The newspaper and plastic scraper works well under the bonnet and does not worry the original paint. I have tried various chemicals and have found myself using WD40 in a spray can which is really very convenient to use and a just as effective as as prepwash, etc. Bloody messy job still - but very rewarding! cheers
