Hi All
Im having clearance issues with 5260 headers (efi heads) being real close to the steering coupling. I had a meeting with my compliance engineer and the requirement here in NZ is 50mm. I've got 10mm! Heat shield will get around the 50mm rule but a standard V8 Torana heat shield won't get anywhere near fitting and I spent hours trying to get it in and it kept fouling. I'm using std Torana engine mounts so I'm as high as I can go to lift the headers away from coupling and sway bar.
Has anyone had success on this? The pipes are already ceramic coated so I don't have too may mod options. Or do I need to get a custom heat shield fabricated to fit in the 10mm gap and hope it doesn't rattle with the exhaust pipes hitting it as the engine moves on its mounts and annoy my cert engineer.
Cheers

You could replace the rag coupler with a second Torana universal joint.

If the engineer requires a vibration damper then Borgeson can make a Torana uni with a vibration damper. My setup has a 9/16 Torana cotter pin uni with a 3/4-36 vibration damper then a 3/4-36 to 1-48 uni and the steering column shaft out of a HQ. You could retain the Torana column steering shaft buy using a Borgeson 3/4-36 to 9/16 cotter pin uni.

Thanks for the photos Ls2lxhatch.
Talked to my helpful old school mechanic and suspension chaps today. Initially were going to try to strap a moulded heat shield to the header primary and see if we can get that to pass which we hope will be the case. To alter the steering mechanisms will be a bit of a major so we'll try the easy option first and then head down the route of doing something with the column unis if we get a cross from the engineer.
Cheers Liam
