0 there because not 6 numbers yet ?

I have no idea, but did see a nos block on Facebook the other day... I would have thought a replacement would be an NR ? This one was NSR ?

Correct Adam.

The Holden mainframe required six digits be entered in the data field so if the engine number was only 5 digits long it would have a 0 inserted to complete the data field.

Hence the number stamped on the engine is HR56376 but GMH records show it as R056376.

I think you will find it is N5R not NSR.

N5R is the prefix for the GMP&A replacement 4.2 litre Blue motor block & piston kit and short motor.

Your LH Torana 253 engine is the 56,376th engine in the H number series. Your engine number tells us that and so does the engine number listed on your letter from GMH.

In reality though it is actually the 55,376th engine as the number series starts at 1,001.

Yep, was a 5. Saved pics at work. Only remember as all the 5's had the banana bend on top.

LH/LX doesn't matter really they both use the same Torana H series engine number prefix except for ADR 27A automatic cars which use the HQ series Q prefix engine numbers for the 173 and 202.

LX is obvious.

The A is the first ADR year for the LX chassis. The chassis prefix should have changed to B ie BLX when next any ADR rules changed or were added.

001075 = 1,075th LX Chassis and the M= Melbourne (Dandenong Vehicle Assembly Plant)

Forgot to mention that the Torana Opel 1900 engines have their own engine number sequence. The H series engine prefix is 6 & 8 cyl engines only.

Dave, most LH auto 6cyl and pre ADR27A 6cyl auto LX use Holden engines too. No X on these either.

Also HR is a 253 prefix denoting LH Torana / LX Torana High Compression

HS is a 253 prefix denoting LH Torana / LX Torana Low Compression
