All the time or only when the ignition is on?

Sounds like the gauge is cactus but there is only one way to find out for sure.

If the fuel gauge is stuffed it is probably because the voltage regulator is also stuffed.

I am assuming you only have a std warning light instrument cluster.

Check to see if the sender wiring is shorted to the body somewhere.

HG Holden use magnetic gauges.

LH Torana use thermal gauges.

Using test procedures suited to magnetic gauges on thermal gauges can burn out a perfectly good thermal gauge in a very short time.

Check to see if the sender wiring is shorted to the body somewhere.

If it is then the fuel gauge is furked. Thermal gauges do not tolerate 0 ohms resistance.

The short circuit would need to be repaired before installing a replacement gauge.

So after checking over everything I could think of I finally got the balls to pull the gauge off the back of the mounting face .....and the arm on the needle wasn't in its proper place...
Put it back , glued the gauge back to the metal plate thing ,plugged it in and all works fine !
Thanks all.

Yep, I was about to suggest that the needle might have detached from the axle it spins on.
