Thinking about buying an air compressor but unsure as I've never bought one, i want to be able to use it with most air tools.

Sand Blaster, paint gun being the main ones.

The best value for size I've found is (at least i think)

anyone used black ridge brand before?

Any recommendations on other compressors?

Spend the extra coin if you can ,you won't regret it,Westair we18 are good ,I think they retail at about the $900 mark.A cheaper alternative to that is the Airstream. Both 15amp.

If your wanting to sandblast you would be looking at a three phase most likely,a 15amp one will be working its guts out .

If you only sandblast every now and then, find a mate who does the same and borrow each other's compressor when needed, or hire a second one just for sandblasting?

Two smaller compressors plumbed together will do the same job as one twice the size and you don't have to buy a huge compressor that's rarely used to capacity.

Why are they bad, the sand blast gun I was looking at only required 90L/m and that was 180?
May just look at hiring or doing as Andrew said and plumbing 2 together.

Wasn't looking to spend a whole lot as it would only be for a couple jobs,
Thanks for the replies

Goodaye all

l have a old Ingolsol Rand 2.5 hp and the cheaper 90 litre one, there chalk and cheese.

The Ingersol is dying but can still do the job and sand blast small stuff better than the small one.

3 phase and 15amp can be a pain if you dont have the wiring or you need to uses it elsewhere.

We have 15amp  Armstrong at work with two tanks takes a while to charge but keeps the flow up.

Buy the best and biggest you can afford.

The 180 quoted is Free Air Delivery, the 90 required by the gun is likely at a certain pressure (180L/min FAD could be only 50 @90psi depending on the compressor).

Unfortunately you need to step up to a higher price bracket to get a compressor that will run "most" tools, realistically 350L/min FAD minimum (and bigger/better ones will retain higher flow at pressure). Proper sand blasting won't happen without a bigger three phase unit, a small spot blasting gun may work OK.

Ingersoll rand hands down....

mine is near on 20yrs old cops a flogging with sandblasting, rattle guns and a spray job or 2 and is still going strong.

I tend to see alot of the cheap air compressors on side of road during hard rubbish pick up.

(Usually grab them and use them as a reservoir tank) have 3 so far lol

i had that supercheap one , it worked ok for painting acrylic primer but you would have no chance sand blasting with 1 or 2 of them .

it would use a lot of sand and take for ever to blast one panel

for painting use a gravity feed gun , a suction feed will use to much air for that compressor

if you can , like you others have said buy a better quality compressor but i still don't think you will be doing lots of blasting with it .

No. I doubt 2 linked together would be that great either.
I grabbed the dead ones and ripped the compressors off them and put the air tanks in as extra air volume storage.
Takes longer to fill but once it does i have a much bigger volume of air to use before compressor needs to engage.
Ive got 3× the small 40L tanks plus my original tank on my compressor.

You can also use old LPG cylinders for extra tanks too with very little work, just make sure you have a very good moisture trap in the line before it/them as there's no way to easily drain accumulated water like you can with a proper compressor tank.

Alright aside from sand blasting then, how would they fair say painting a panel at a time (no topcoats as i don't trust myself)?

With a gravity feed gun that shitfighter from supercheap will do the job for one panel at a time.

Damn frustrating painting like that though.

Buy a 15amp McMillan and be done with it. Horn compressor.
