Hi evey one,

I am doing a hatch back restoration with an LS1. I need some advice or experience on fuel set ups.

I have installed a Brown Davis drop tank which has a swirl pot installed inside the tank with a 1/2 " fuel pick up

I belive the standard fuel system for an injected engine is a electric low pressure fuel pump in line from the main tank to the swirl pot.

Then a high volume electric fuel pump and fuel filter in line from the swirl pot and the fuel regulator. The regulator then returns fuel  to the tank and delivers fuel to the rail (closed end rail for LS1) I don't want to try and install Commodore in tank pump as the swirl pot is part of the tank and to try an plumb it in line would ruin the tank.

Is it possible to have high flow pump that will draw fuel (the pump will be mounted higher than the fuel pick up)?

Is it possible to have a low pressure pump after the swirl pot that would draw fuel then have a high volume pump?

or have I got it wrong and there is a correct way plumb the fuel system.

Hi mate.

Before I went to an intank commo style pump/regulator assembly, I had a high pressure pump mounted above the fuel tank which then went into a fuel filter/fuel pressure reg assembly. From there it went direct to the LS fuel rail and the return line from the filter/reg assembly went back to the tank. Very easy and simple to do.

Only real drawback is the noise generated by the external pump....

I never had an issue at the rail with fuel pressure. Sat at a consistent 58psi rail pressure when on the dyno at all revs.

I think I have my old pump & filter/reg combo here somewhere if you'd want to buy it. Would just need to find it.

I'm fairly sure there are photos and an explanation of the plumbing somewhere in my build thread (LX Project) if you can be arsed reading through all that.

I use an Aeromotive pump (mounted external of the tank, don't notice the noise by the way either) up to the fuel rails, then a matching pressure regulator mounted on the return side of the rails.  No problems at all..nice and simple and works well.

An internal high pressure pump would be a fine way to go of course too, but I went the external way when I built it and just left it that way since it works.

Hi Daz, I would be very interested in pump fiter reg set, message me if you can find it. My only concerns where would it draw the fuel reliabily and does it need to be primed.

Did you change your set up for any reason?, Did you increase the diameter of the solid fuel line under the car. I've been advised to use 10mm. (I have enjoyed reading your thread)

HI jeff where was your swirl pot (in the tank?)

Don't use a swirl pot...

The tank has a line that draws from the bottom with baffles built in around and see fine. (factory tanks only use a filter that draw off the bottom basically as well with the plastic housing around.

I never run the tank down really low so even cornering, etc haven't seen any probably with starvation issues.

I use -8an feed line and -6an return line for what it's worth as well.

To answer the original question, no an electric pump of any tyoe will not draw through a swirl pot, they are pushers not suckers.

Yep, just found it.

I had no issues with it drawing fuel. Made 275rwkw and held solid at 58 psi at the rail. Just had a look, it is the MSD fuel pump

(see here http://www.speedwaym...Pump,31226.html)

I had a custom alloy tank made and had it designed to fit the factory commo in tank pump & reg. I did this for simplicity, less noise etc.

Sing out if you want it. If you come to the Nats next month I can give it to you there.

Hi Bomber,

Thats what I was thinking, and no one could tell me of a pump that would suck that I have spoken to.

I'll try Daz's set up as he knows what has worked, and see what happens.

Thanks for finding it, I"ll be in touch. Did you run a swirl pot in you set up with the pump?

Nah, no swirl pot. Standard Torana tank and pickup.

If you're NOT going to run a return line make sure to get a pump that suits (ie. has an internal bypass) otherwise you'll end up cooking the pump.

I have found a solution that I'm now going to try. I spoke to David from Brown Davis

He's very helpful and they offer great support. He said I need a two pump set up. The first pump is mounted as close as reasonable

to the height of the tank. This is a carbie type of fuel pump which is low pressure and has a flow rate that mates an LS1. (240lt/ hour max)

this is called a lift pump.

The second pump is hi pressure (58PSI)with a matching flow rate. I will mount the second pump with a filter and regulator in the boot well of the

hatch. It needs to be enclosed for engineering. Both pumps have filters before the pump.

The return line will run off the regulator and a 10mm hard line under the car.

I'll post some pictures when it's sorted.
