Hey guys, I want to replace the shocks and springs in my LC as I am sure they are shagged.

I would like to lower the car slightly.

My question is, does this whole thing have to be done at the same time?

Do you have to get "lowered" shocks to go with "lowered" springs?

I.E, could I just get my springs fitted for now, and then get shocks later, or vice versa?

Cheers

You don't need to take the springs off to change the shock absorbers if that is what your asking but you do have to take the shocks off to change the springs. So yes you could change your shocks later if the current ones are not RS.

Dunno much about these beasties, but if like the LH/LX on the rears, if going lowered springs, you need shorter shocks, otherwise your springs are going to fall out each and every time you jack the car up. Not sure about the front.

Yes even the back springs on lc/j are bolted in top & bottom.

Yeah I'd definately get the rear shocks done at least when you change the rear springs.. Like yella said you dont want to get a bit of lift over a hill or whatnot and have your springs fall out! Saying that I need to practise what I preach.

From memory, front isn't an issue, as the shock runs up the middle of the spring. On the rear (LH/LX again) the spring sits alonside the shocks.

Hrmm fair enough then.

Do you all think it would be safe to just change say the front shocks and springs firstly, then change the rear shocks and springs later?

Cheers

As gtrboyy has said the springs in the rear of the LC/J are bolted in both ends so there is no way they can fall out.

If you are paying someone to do the springs, just get them to do the shocks as well, it should add almost no more labour cost to the job. As others have said to replace the spring the shock comes out anyways. To replace the spring you need to remove the stub axels, and there is a fair amount of work in it. If you are mechanicaly minded and have a LC workshop manual i would recommend doing it yourself if you have time. I did mine so in the end it cost me only $650 for parts.

It did take saturday and then every nite working after work to replace the front springs and shocks, and then 2 hours on friday nite to replace the rear springs and shocks. Replacing rear shocks and springs is super easy... I would recommend doing it yourself if you are ok with a spanner.

If you have any questions send me a PM, i have done this complete job to mine.

Steve

Thanks for the clarification Steve. That's a difference then. In the LH/LX, the springs just sit on a pad on the axle tube and a recess up top. To remove you just remove the shock absorber top, jack the car up, and they literally fall out. Obviously one of the differences between the two models. I wasn't sure what to make of GTR's post.

I was just trying to simply say that if you want to change the shock absorbers on the the front or back of an lc/j that you dont have to remove the springs at all unless you want to change the front springs, then you also have to take out the front shock absorbers.Bit confusing to say but easy to understand once you look at an lc/j.

I imagine so. Sorry, but as I have proven, I'm 100% LC/LJ illiterate. For some strange reason, I was even thinking at one stage that they were a leaf spring rear. Don't think they are though.

Sweet guys thanks for all the input, can anyone tell me if I have to replace front and back at the same time?

Will there be adverse reactions if I dont?

Cheers

You'll either be looking at the sky or ground for a short time unless you bend your neck. Only disadvantage I can see.

It may look and feel funny for a while, and some people may even point and laugh, but other than that, should be fine.

I quite like the launching look lol.Back-end lower than the front.

I want to lower the back of mine another inch but there are too many other things needed to be done 1st.
