If it has lost its tags it's VIN is lost with the tags, and you need the VIN tag to get the PSN to identify the vehicle. If you have its engine number you may have a chance though.

If that is the case and you have the VIN recorded prior to losing the tags, just get the digits after the J and ignore the H on the end. Will look like J512345. People will be able to look the car up for you.

Chassis number is stamped in the car. Body number is on the body plate (matches PSN part of VIN on LH). VIN is on the skinny plate, looks like 8D69ZEJ512345H.

This gets brought up so often that sometimes I wish there was a big flashing banner on the main page...

You're confusing the Holden VIN with the 17-digit ISO VIN that replaced chassis numbers on later model cars, the ISO VIN didn't become mandatory in Australia until 1989 (I think it was) although some imported cars had them some years earlier as Australia was a little slow on the uptake.

I had an L34 like this a few years back, that had been a stolen and recovered and was wearing SLR5000 ID plates. I wrecked it out maybe 3-4 years ago and the body was cutup for body sections. I think all I kept was the front calipers for my HK. The rest including a lot of mint original bits went to help restore other cars.
