Good evening all....

A mate of mine has just purchased an LX hatch, with a 350 chev in it, running an auto and a 9inch. He is extremely happy with the car, BUT wants to change from auto to manual.

Anyone here have any suggestions as to what a good manual box is that will suit.... and have the shifter in a decent spot.????

I presume there are at least a few people on this site running the 350 chev, 9 inch and a manual box combo?

He was thinking it would be nice to have the Tremec 6 speed box from a VZ comm-forma-dore. Does anyone know if that is a nice fit, with the shifter in a decent spot?

Any info would be great....

Cheers,
SXCLX

i think you will find that the 6 speed is too big. I have a hatch with a chev and it had a muncie, great gearbox with a hurst shifter but not strong enough for what i had planned for my motor, so pulled the box out and put a tremec tko 600, fit straight in, shifter in perfect position, used same crossmember just further back, same bellhousing, the only bad thing...... not cheap. What are your plans for the car? Are you going to do any form of racing? How much power or more important torque does the motor have?

Thanx mate for the quick reply....

Just a few more questions for you.....

What car did the Muncie box come out of originally?

And the same for the Tremec TKO 600. What car was it originally from.

You mentioned that they are quite pricey.... how much exactly are we looking at?

I will talk to him furthur this afternoon and find out his plans ie - racing, street use etc. Also will try and get an idea from him on what sort of power it is putting out.

Cheers

With the muncie i am not sure but it does have a 10 spline input shaft were as the tremec has 26 so had to change the clutch plate. As for the tremec, i got it from the states new. It cost me $3000 shipped to my door but i did split the cost of freight with 3 mates who also bought the same gear box from the same supplier. I know Dellow in sydney have them and so does Malwood in qld and from memory they wanted around $4500, personaly i found Malwood much more friendly and willing to take timeout to answer any questions i had.

i think you will find that the 6 speed is too big.

A Tremec T56 6 speed will fit nicely. The same shifter location (that of a M20/M21) can be retained also.

Can anybody confirm that the T56 6 Speed will fit. I found a site a while ago that had pics of one being trial fitted in a car and it didnt sit in the tunnel very well at all.

Links, pics etc would be much appreciated.

I've got one fitted in my LX.

It was probably my LX that you saw the T56 being trial fitted.

Pics, something??

Did the tunnel need to be modified??
What sort of engine you running, 308, 350??
I am seriously looking to do this to mine but cant get any info down here in Tassie. Looking for as much information as possible before I start handing out the hard earned cash for all the bits!

That and the car is a daily so i cant afford to get halfway through and find I missed something and have to wait for parts to arrive.

The T56 is behind a 308.

The tunnel didn't have to be modified. Only slight massaging at the rear passenger side of the tunnel to allow clearence for the RLS.

The exhaust had to be modifed, new tailshaft and a custom cross member fabricated.

RLS?? Sorry, having a blonde moment!! (No offence to any blondes out there! ;) )

Mine is running a Saginaw at the moment so its alrady had the tunnel massaged, new zorst system being built in the next week or so, can you advise what had to be changed and why so I can allow for this while fabbing up the new twin system.

Tailshaft had to be shortened??

Do you still have the pics up on a website somewhere??
I think it was a red Torrie I saw, up on a hoist with, I think, a dummy case fitted up.

Also can anybody help with the bolt up of these boxes.
Are the LS1 blocks the same as a SBC. ie: Will I need an adaptor or will it bolt straight to the block??

RLS = Reverse Lockout Solenoid.

It will bolt up to your SBC with the correct bellhousing.

The tailshaft had to be shortened.

I'd personally wait to fit the box before getting exhaust work done, just to be on the safe side. I haven't got that many pictures of the install (I'm 16,000km away from my car atm) but I'll try and post some pictures when I get a chance.

Any info is much appreciated. I have this thread set to notify me of new posts so post away or send me a PM.
