Hey all,

I am looking at buying a 253 from an HZ. It is still in car and running sweet.

If I buy it, along with the trimatic, what else, a part from radiator
and drive shaft do I need to get to swap from the current 202?
Would standard HZ headers still be usable? run LH/X exhaust from there back?
Do I need to upgrade brakes now? or can that wait a bit?
Same with diff, now or can I be gentle?
What about alternator bracket?

Had a scan through the threads, so I have a few tips. Never done this before,
so any advice would be appreciated.

Car is not registered, but will be easy to register. Do it first, then swap motor?

Oh!!! car is a 202 auto '77 Hatchback. (possibly an ex Sunbudgie)

The diff for the six is the same as the 8...as are the brakes but the booster needs to be changed?

I think you will need a torry alternator bracket as I beleive the other on will foul...but those are things you can confirm on the day you change...V8 radiator..will the HZ item fit? If you get into a bind with the exhaust I have some LX extractors.

Has the car been out of NSW rego for more than 3 months? if so don't rego yet..put new engine in and then do the blue slip...go gas and scoop $2000!!

from memory one exhaust manifold will foul (left?) and radiator may need a trim to fit.
alt bracket may need changing.
extending some bay wires may be needed and the rest bolts in.

I'm actually guna do the same thing, 235 trimatic out of a HZ wagon.

Will the sump fit? How about the HZ engine mounts?

I have a 202 4 speed hatch atm, but can't resist this 8 for next to nothing.

If i were to keep my 4 speed, what changes would i need to make?

Or if i was to put the trimatic in, i know i would need to get a t-bar (the box is set up for a column shift out of the hz), so would the linkages be the same? Could a hz t-bar be used?

So the banjo would hold up fine?

What about the accl. cable?

I know exhaust is diff, probably wanna go a nice set of extractors and a split system anyway.

Cheers guys!

Mike

Thanks guys! all getting closer.

Thanks Keithy and FastEH.

I was hoping to catch up at the steak house Friday,
but I'll be in in Melbourne on business.

I'm gonna be driving it as a daily, so I really want to get
it all together and do the swap over a week end, maybe a long weekend!!
Is that in the realms of possibility? I can hire a hoist/engine stand for a day
or two, but never having done it before, I might take you up on some advice
at the least Keith. (keep them funnies comming mate!! I get withdrawls when
there is nothing in the inbox!! LOL)

Ta guys.

Hmmmm? gas eh? must read those posts again on the subsidy!

ALX76, Can 6cyl 4 speeds be put behind v8's?

I'm pretty sure the left manifold will foul. I'd just go a set of extractors while you're at it.

How long has that car been out of rego?

You are really supposed to put the bigger brake booster on but i found a guy who passed my 202 -> 253 conversion without touching the brakes.

Yeah you will need to do some wire extensioning.

You will probably need to lengthen your throttle cable too.

Are you running standard springs in the front? If you are you will need to change them for heavy duty v8 springs or you probably won't have much suspension travel left.

Depending how hard you're gonna work and how many mates you've got to help you, you may get it done in a weekend. I thought mine would only take a few days, ended up taking me 5 solid weeks, (but i had a LOT of dilemmas).

Cheers.
