I recently discovered that the end of my steering colomn is slightly bent where the crush tube part is. I was going to try to straighten it but then thought id might as well replace it with another! Cant seem to find any decent lx ones and thought maybe a uc one can be used?

Are the uc steering column the same as the lh/lx ones?

Where are you?

They will fit I beleive but the difference is in the blinker switch..there are threads around detailing what you have to do to change to the later switch.

pitty, im in adelaide.

thats right the uc uses commodore style indicator stalk. The previous owner to my car actually converted to the uc indicator stalk, which i dont like, so im gonna change it back to the original one.

This is where they crack. Mine was really cracked, and the replacement one I got, an LX one also had a small crack. LH & LX are the same, the UC is an entirely different beast (so I'm told anyway, never done the comparison myself). Still have the pictured outer column in the shed to repair with the MIG. If you get a replacement one, I recommend running a line of weld along the edge to provide additional strength and reduce the chance of it cracking again.

I'd like to provide more info, but was picked up on a rego inspection as a worn steering bearing, so had to get it done pronto by a shop to maintain rego.

355lxss,

I believe you can use the whole UC column in LH/LX provided you do the appropriate mods to the wiring for the wipers and headlights.

If you start swapping bits between UC and LX columns there are some subtle differences.

You can swap the indicator stalks but the UC indicator stalk doesn't meet the honey pot properly on the LX - it still works though as that is how mine is at the moment.

It is a lot of years since I had an LX and UC one apart side by side but from memory there are differences in the push rod from the ignition barrel to the starter switch and also differences in the small parts which holds the ignition barrel in.
