Hey guys I’ve bought a 4 cylinder lc that’s been converted to 6 cylinder in Adelaide SA. It’s been done really well, rails and whole front unpicked and welded back up professionally. I’ll have it ready to drive hopefully in a few weeks. Now it’s obviously registered as a 4 cylinder and I was wondering what the next steps are for rego. Is it just a matter of advising transport SA with a new engine number etc or is it a full inspection at regency park. Thanks guys

You will need an Engineers report of what is done first:

There is a no tag option for original shells for rego too.

This may be a stupid question but, if the rails have been swapped, wouldn't it now have the six cylinder car's chassis number stamping?

Therefore its a 6 cylinder car with a 4 cylinder rear end. If worded that way you might have a better chance of rego?

Just pull the tags off, leaving the compliance plate. Do a new rego. I doubt anyone would know. It is what I’d do for a Holden. Remember most of the Engineering rules allow you to self Engineer to upgrade to an engine that was optional for the Series. It’s an LC. 138, 161, 173 and 186 were optional or standard. GMH even said that a 3300 XU1 engine was the suitable replacement for 3100 when they released their engine compatibility chart not long into HQ.

As above. If it’s well done just present it and you should be fine.

I would start by taking it in for an identity check and engine number change. Maybe take to Lonsdale as they are bit more casual. They should just approve it.

The firewall forward is the 6cyl car so that holds the identity of the vehicle to be registered. If the 4cyl rear axle and trailing arm mounts were replaced (and they should have been) with the 6cyl items then the rear half is now effectively a 6cyl rear body.

Personally I wouldn't consider it as converting a 4cyl to 6cyl, rather it is repairing a damaged 6cyl model by performing a cut and shut using a 4cyl rear body section.

There are a few hidden parts that will still give the back half of the body away as a 4cyl, if your not in the know of these body and did not do the conversion yourself. If you need help and want to know more just pm me and I will fill you in, I have done this about five times myself for other people,,,I'm saying this is the car that forum member mikecatts was building some time back, there is a thread some were about it.

Rego want be a problem as long as the inner guard number is from a 6cyl 2 door.

Keep us posted

Cheers gong
