Those of you with hoists be it 2 or 4 post. What are your decisions for going in the direction that you did? What are the pros/cons of a 2 or 4 post? If 2 post, is a clear floor option the best?

2 post clear floor for me.
Don’t like tripping over shit whilst looking up under the car!
Can move trans jacks etc anywhere under the vehicles.
Plus don’t see the point of lifting the car up then still have to jack the wheels up again to do tyres/brakes wheel bearings etc with a 4 post.
Though door access with bigger cars can be a pain if your girth is well fed 🍺 on a 2 poster.

I have a 2 post but not clear floor, they were way too dear. I have a 3tonne Molnar. Better for resto especially for cars with a removable crossmember like Holdens up to HG and Torana.
I am looking at a 2m clearance parking hoist for the garage though, better for parking under than a 2 post.

Hi Brad,
We have one of each in the shed.
Son stores a car on the 4 post, to me that's what they are good at.
I have a clear floor 2 post, perfect for motor, gearbox, diff , brake etc work.
If I could have only one, it would be the 2 post by a mile.
But it really depends what your intended use is.
Old school cars and even a few newer ones, bend a little when up on the 2 post hoists. i.e. doors dont open or close properly.
For storage, 2 post no good. IMHO

2 poster all the way, only thing a 4 poster is good for is storing cars on pretty much.

This one is 2832mm high. The car might sit another metre up?

https://tufflift.com...se-plate-hoist/

Off the drawing here the top of the pads is 800mm down from the top. So measure from where you’d put the pads under the car to the top.

HAPP have a 2 post with 2.4mtr columns.

2 posters take up more room than a 4.

Brad , HAPP are Qld based so freight is more reasonable . Awesome to deal with .

All great info guys!!! Ok, so yeah a 4 post for storage. 2 post for actually working on a car. Makes sense. I did read something about symmetrical and asymmetrical hoists, with the asymmetrical hoist making it a bit easier to open the doors?

Neither are easy to open the doors. I just roll the car into position after getting out, better than banging a door.

Get a clear floor, only 1 to have.

okey dokey, the one in the pic has 3.4m to the gutter.

Idea was to allow the hoist to be positioned to one side.....you may still be able to fit one more towards the centre.   Or build a bigger shed. :D

Clear floor 2 poster, no question.

Once you have a clear floor 2 poster, then there's a question about if you want a second hoist... whether it should be a 2 or 4 poster.

^^Agree, a 2 poster first of any kind. Then a 4 poster as a second one!

We have a 2 & 4 post hoists at our TAFE automotive teaching rooms that our car club hires for 2 semesters a year @ $100/semester which is absolutely great

When I need to put up the SS I line up early for the 2 poster or will wait till it is available as I don't like the 4 poster for many reasons BUT it is the best one for a wheel alignment

If I was to buy a hoist, it would be a 2 poster

Spot on.

I have the luxury of having 4 hoists, 3 x 2-posters & a 4-poster with a scissor lift & alignment ramps.

The 2-posters are best for most general work, but the 4-poster is really good for getting a car in the air quickly & simply & for checking things like suspension & exhaust clearances at normal ride height.

The 4-poster is also better for clutch jobs & auto transmission servicing.

It is also much easier to get in & out of the car for a bloke of my size.

Yeah I was going to add - a 4 poster would be ideal for exhaust work fabrication at ride height. 2 posters seem to be preferred for majority of other jobs.

Father in law put a 2 poster in the centre of his garage - 3m wall heights and steep pitch gable (from memory maybe 25 degree), and it just fits and works mm perfect for medium size cars such as Torana’s/EH’s.

Yep agree with others 2 poster for working on & 4 poster for storage...both would be perfect.

Never liked old project cars sitting on 2 posters way up in the air for long periods of time.

My brother had 3 hoists.

2 were traditional 4 posts and the other was more of a scissor lift.

Being an exhaust shop that was what was needed as mentioned by someone else for getting clearances right.

Ive worked under 2 and 4 posts, and to be honest I felt a lot safer under the 4 post when undoing something really tight.

There was just a little more movement with the 2 post.

Was still safe, but just one of those things.

Cheers

Rob
