Varex mufflers and similar

Anyone had experience with Varex mufflers or similar products?
Just a late night idea I had for my torana which is about to get a 355 installed, tri-ys and a 2.5inch twin system with crossover. It ran group C pipes on the engine dyno and sounded like the apocalypse (straight up ear porn). Now I know I won't get that note out of a full exhaust system, but the thought of an adjustable muffler for those moments when there isn't any extra attention around is interesting to me....expensive, but interesting....
Anyone know of someone with these systems? Seems everyone runs them on fuel injected engines, am yet to see a clip online showing it ran on a carb engine with a bit of go about it

It’s certainly a fun thing in my Clubsport. Can cruise quietly and then with a press of a button it’s cackle time!
I noticed that Performance warehouse in Melbourne carries a lot of components to do this. I’m thinking of doing something like this to my HQ.

Yeah I've often pondered this for the 383 in my LX too. As rexy said - Performance Warehouse have a lot of interesting gear (I was looking at their electric cut-outs, not mufflers).
The only thing that turns me off the cut-outs, is what happens to the exhaust flow when the second y piece (escape route) is blocked/not in use. You've got exhaust gases heading into that pipe and bouncing back into the normal pipe.
The variable/adjustable mufflers would be interesting to try.

Just be good to have an option available so I can be polite around the neighbours, then go deaf somewhere remote....or scare people at show n shines (remember when we used to meet with our cars haha)
Wouldn't imagine on a street engine there would be any noticeable difference in output from a mod like that, especially if its right up the back. On a race engine at rpm then that's a different story

Have twin 3" varex on a BBC, closed they are way(too) quiet, open they are loud !
With 580whp and 700lbft open, engine gets choked to death closed and losses 100-150hp and 200+lbft, really noticeable under foot on street.
Closed is only for when mrs drives the car and when you get too close to the fuzz.

I suspected they might be too quiet when closed, from the demo I have seen online. Maybe a cut-out prior to the muffler is a better idea...and cheaper haha
Not saying you're lying at all, but 200lbft is a massive drop, especially from a muffler. Have you had it on a dyno to verify? Whats the exhaust and header size?
Again, I'll take your word for it, but thats more than a quarter of the engines output from what you've described. Never heard a muffler do that before, but first time for everything I guess

Been thinking about these for sle revamp...was way too loud for anything other than a short drive yet when quietened it down felt like it lost power/responsiveness.
Might just have 2 different sets of pipes for rear as is flanged at diff anyway.

2" primaries tri-y...not the best but space issues!, was tested on dyno while setting up nitrous, only ran it up with mufflers closed once for shits and giggles, knew it would suck, was a "oh shit, that can't be good for it lets not do that again" moment.

So mufflers just off the collector? That would make sense as the Varex design looks like a restriction. I've read and heard of plenty of occurrences where a high output engine is sensitive to exhaust and muffler combinations.
My 355 is all low and mid range torque so it hopefully won't be as sensitive.
But again, the mufflers seem to be too quiet with the valve shut, maybe a cut-out prior to muffler is a better play

Mufflers are ~1300mm back off extractors with H pipe.
Varex are expensive, super quiet and restrictive closed, would be better with a healthy muffler and cut outs

Check out AES racing mufflers on FB.
AES (Active exhaust systems) have been around for ages and are definitely the best cut outs around. All the cheap Chinese motors will jam or the butterflies will bend and not seal.
Yes they are expensive but check out the quality, strength and Australian made
They operate on vacuum and don’t rely on electric motors that can be a problem also!
2 different types of valves.
One is located inline with the exhaust and doesn’t fully close, causes a restriction reducing Noise output and making your existing mufflers more effective, if you have any
The other is a fully sealing cut out style.
Haven’t bought mine yet but have being researching for years on this one.
Varex is a Turbo style muffler (triple pass) so no wonder it is quiet when closed and also restrictive!
